Chapter 7 - The Price of the Villa.

At the resort, Ethan spent the night making calls from the balcony while Madison sat inside pretending to answer emails.
She had not sent the board memo.
Instead, she saved a copy and told Ethan the hotel internet was unstable.
He believed her because he was busy blaming Claire for everything else.
Near midnight, Ethan finally closed his laptop.
"Tomorrow we'll sort out the bank issue."
Madison looked at him.
"And Monday?"
"Monday changes the company."
"You mean Claire leaves."
Ethan poured himself sparkling water from the minibar.
"Claire gets what she says she wants."
"Did she say she wanted to leave?"
His eyes hardened.
"Why are you asking me that again?"
Madison leaned back.
"Because I'm attaching my name to documents."
"Your future depends on those documents."
The warning was wrapped in a promise.
Madison heard both.
Her phone buzzed with a calendar alert she had never created.
It pointed to an archived operations folder.
Inside was an old draft of the proposed company sale.
Madison opened it and saw a number large enough to explain Ethan's urgency.
If the transaction closed under his sole control, his personal payout would be enormous.
Claire's founder rights were the obstacle.
Madison scrolled further.
A side letter promised Ethan a post-sale advisory role.
There was no role for Madison.
There was no promotion.
There was only a temporary title that disappeared when the sale closed.
She felt embarrassed before she felt angry.
Ethan had told her that Claire no longer cared about the company.
He had told her the marriage had become a legal formality.
He had told her that Monday would finally make everything honest.
None of those statements survived contact with the documents.
"I'm going downstairs," Madison said.
Ethan barely looked up.
"For what?"
"Air."
The lobby was nearly empty when she reached it.
A night manager stood behind the desk reviewing reservations.
Madison asked for a printed copy of the villa charges because she wanted to know what had been booked under her name.
The manager hesitated, then provided the portion linked to her personal guarantee.
The reservation had originally been created by Ethan.
But the villa had been paid in advance by a Bennett Meridian executive travel account using Claire's authorization profile.
Madison stared at the record.
Claire had not even known she was coming.
Yet the booking made it appear that Claire had approved everything.
That detail suddenly connected the trip to the fake expense story.
The resort was not just a romantic escape or an anniversary humiliation.
It was evidence Ethan could later use to claim Claire authorized questionable spending.
Madison took a photograph of the page.
Then she opened the anonymous chat and typed one sentence.
"I'm ready to talk."
The reply came from the same unknown number.
"Then stop protecting him."
Madison looked over her shoulder.
Ethan was standing at the far end of the lobby.
He had come downstairs silently.
His eyes moved from her face to the paper in her hand.
"What are you doing?"
For the first time since the trip began, Madison did not smile.
"Finding out how much this villa really costs."
May you like
Ethan walked toward her.
And Madison realized the price had never been money.
