Chapter 13 - The Photograph's Owner.

The restaurant photograph became the auditors' next focus.
Claire remembered the room immediately after Felix enlarged the image.
The brass railing and green tiled wall belonged to a private dining club near Bennett Meridian's old office.
Membership was limited.
Claire knew half the people who could have taken the picture.
The club manager agreed to review the reservation records.
Ethan had booked a corner table for two.
Another Bennett Meridian director had been seated three tables away.
Her name was Evelyn Shaw.
Evelyn had served on the board since the company's fourth year and rarely involved herself in office politics.
She was also the only director who had refused to support Ethan's temporary-control motion Monday morning.
Claire called her.
Evelyn did not pretend to be surprised.
"I wondered when you'd reach me."
Claire went quiet.
"You took the photograph."
"Yes."
"Why didn't you send it to me directly?"
Evelyn explained that she had seen Ethan and Madison at the club and initially assumed Claire knew.
Then she overheard Ethan tell Madison that Claire would be out of the country when "the papers went live."
Evelyn did not know what papers he meant.
She photographed them from a distance because she wanted a record.
The next day, she noticed Henry asking unusual questions about voting procedures.
That was when she contacted Felix.
"Why hide your name?"
"Because Henry controlled the board agenda, and I didn't know who else was involved."
Claire understood the caution, but it still bothered her.
"You could have called me."
"I should have."
It was becoming the sentence of the week.
Claire closed her eyes briefly.
"What else did you hear?"
Evelyn hesitated.
"Madison asked Ethan whether you would sign."
Claire waited.
"He said you wouldn't need to."
The answer removed the last uncertainty about intent.
Madison had known Claire had not signed before the airport.
Claire asked Madison to join the call.
When confronted, Madison did not deny it.
"He told me the board could approve the temporary transfer without your signature."
Rachel shook her head.
"And you believed that?"
Madison's voice cracked slightly, but she stayed composed.
"I wanted to."
That answer was uglier and more useful than another excuse.
Claire finally saw Madison clearly.
She was not an innocent employee swept into a powerful man's plan.
She had recognized warning signs and stepped over them because she believed a promotion waited on the other side.
She only changed direction when she discovered Ethan planned to sacrifice her too.
Claire felt no need to punish her personally.
The facts would do enough.
Madison agreed to resign and cooperate fully with the investigation.
Henry resigned from the board before noon after the email chain was presented to outside counsel.
Ethan refused to resign from anything.
Instead, he sent Claire a message asking to meet at their house.
"No lawyers. No board. Just us."
Claire stared at the screen.
Ten years of marriage sat behind those words.
So did ten years of passwords, shared plans, inside jokes, missed dinners, and promises that now looked different in memory.
Rachel advised against meeting alone.
Claire agreed.
She chose a public conference suite at their attorney's office instead.
Ethan arrived carrying no papers.
He looked older than he had at the airport.
He sat across from Claire and said the one thing she had not expected.
"I can explain why I needed you off that plane."
Claire's eyes narrowed.
"You needed me on the plane."
Ethan shook his head.
May you like
"Not by the end."
And for the first time, Claire wondered whether Ethan had discovered the anonymous warnings before departure.
