Chapter 5 - The Blue Folder.

Madison waited until Ethan stepped outside the resort lobby to speak with his attorney.

Then she opened the navy carry-on.

Her hands were steady at first.

They stopped being steady when she pulled out the blue folder.

The first document was a draft promotion letter naming her Executive Vice President after Claire's leave.

Madison had known about that one.

Ethan had shown it to her over dinner two weeks earlier.

The second document was new.

It described Madison as the employee who had independently prepared the disputed governance papers.

Her name appeared beneath a paragraph stating that any procedural errors had occurred without Ethan's knowledge.

Madison read the paragraph twice.

She understood exactly what it meant.

If the plan failed, Ethan had already prepared a version in which she became the mistake.

A third document contained a draft termination letter for her.

The date field was blank.

The reason listed was unauthorized access to executive records.

Madison's face went cold.

She heard Ethan's voice outside and shoved the papers back into the folder.

Her phone buzzed again.

"Now check page fourteen."

She opened the file one more time.

Page fourteen contained a printed email chain between Ethan and an outside consultant.

Ethan had written that Claire would be "offshore and unreachable" when the board packet circulated.

He had also written that Madison "believes she is protected."

Madison stared at the line until footsteps approached.

She zipped the carry-on and stepped away just before Ethan returned.

"Problem solved," he said.

"Was it?"

Ethan looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

Madison forced a smile.

"Nothing."

He studied her for a moment, then picked up the bag.

The hotel manager had arranged a standard room while payment was reviewed.

Ethan hated the downgrade more than he wanted to admit.

As they followed the bell attendant, Madison walked half a step behind him.

That was where Ethan preferred employees to walk.

She had once mistaken that preference for confidence.

Now it looked like control.

Inside the room, Ethan immediately opened his laptop.

"I need you to send the board memo from your account."

Madison set her handbag down.

"Why mine?"

"Because you're corporate operations."

"I'm executive support."

"Not after Monday."

The promise no longer sounded flattering.

It sounded like bait.

Madison watched him open a prepared email addressed to all directors.

The message said Claire had become emotionally unstable after a marital disagreement and had interfered with company finances.

Madison's stomach tightened.

"You're putting that in writing?"

"I'm protecting the company."

"From Claire?"

"From chaos."

He turned the laptop toward her.

"Send it."

Madison placed her fingers on the keyboard but did not press the button.

Her phone was face down beside the computer.

Under the table, she tapped the side key and started a voice memo for herself.

Then she looked Ethan directly in the eye.

"Did Claire ever agree to step away?"

His expression changed by less than an inch.

It was enough.

"Just send the email."

Madison understood that the answer was no.

She also understood something worse.

The mysterious person messaging her knew what was inside Ethan's bag before she did.

Someone inside Bennett Meridian had been watching the plan unfold.

And that person had chosen tonight to turn Madison against him.
