Chapter 9 - The Woman From the Other Seat.

Every face in the conference room turned toward Madison.
Ethan stopped speaking mid-sentence on the wall screen.
"What are you doing there?"
Madison closed the door behind her.
She was still wearing the cream blazer she had traveled in, but the confidence from the airport was gone.
In its place was something harder.
"I took the first flight back."
Ethan's expression tightened.
"We discussed this."
"You discussed it."
Madison placed the blue folder in front of Henry Walsh.
Claire watched her carefully.
She did not feel gratitude.
Not yet.
Madison had helped build at least part of the scheme now threatening Claire's company.
Henry opened the folder.
The first page was Madison's promised promotion.
The second page was the document blaming her for unauthorized governance work.
The third was her undated termination letter.
The directors began reading in silence.
Ethan recovered quickly.
"Those are drafts taken out of context."
Madison looked at the screen.
"The context is that you planned to blame me if Claire challenged the documents."
Ethan laughed once.
"You are angry because our personal situation changed."
Madison's cheeks colored.
Claire understood the tactic immediately.
He was turning Madison into the emotional woman now.
Madison opened her phone.
"I recorded my own conversation with you in St. Lucia."
Rachel raised a hand.
"Before we play anything, we verify what can appropriately be used."
Madison nodded and handed the phone to counsel instead.
"Then read the messages."
The written exchange was enough to shift the room.
Ethan had instructed Madison to send the board memo from her account.
He had told her Claire never approved the leave papers.
He had also said, "By Monday, approval won't matter."
Henry leaned back slowly.
"Ethan, did you write that?"
Ethan looked away from the camera for a moment.
"Private messages can be misinterpreted."
Claire finally spoke.
"Then let's use the system logs."
Nora projected the metadata showing the fake email originated from Ethan's office desktop.
The room went quiet again.
Ethan's face lost color.
"Claire had access to that computer too."
"I wasn't in your office that night," Claire said.
"Prove it."
Nora clicked to the next slide.
Building access logs showed Claire had left headquarters at 6:12 p.m.
Ethan's badge entered his office at 9:41 p.m.
The fake email was created at 9:53 p.m.
For the first time, Ethan had no immediate answer.
Then one of the remote directors interrupted.
"What about the proposed sale?"
Claire looked toward the screen.
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
Madison looked confused.
Henry stopped turning pages.
"What proposed sale?"
Claire slid the investor agenda across the table.
Rachel explained that a confidential transaction discussion had been scheduled immediately after the governance vote.
No board authorization had been requested.
Ethan leaned forward.
"That was exploratory."
Henry's voice became colder.
"You were exploring a sale of this company while seeking sole voting control?"
Ethan started to answer.
Madison interrupted him.
"There is more."
She removed a folded resort invoice from her handbag.
"The trip itself was booked to Claire's authorization profile."
Claire looked at the paper.
Madison met her eyes for the first time.
"He wasn't only using the trip to get you out of town."
She took a breath.
May you like
"He was building a record that made it look like you approved the spending too."
The humiliation at the airport suddenly became the smallest part of the plan.
