Chapter 10 - The Night Lucas Lied.

Claire had no intention of going to the warehouse alone.
She also had no intention of ignoring the message.
Mara organized surveillance teams around the waterfront while Claire remained at a command vehicle two blocks away.
Harry argued against using her at all.
Claire reminded him that whoever sent the message expected her.
At 11:40 p.m., a third text arrived.
WHERE ARE YOU?
Claire responded under Mara's direction.
Five minutes away.
The reply came immediately.
NO POLICE.
Claire almost smiled despite the fear.
People who demanded no police usually had already planned for them.
At midnight, officers entered the warehouse from three sides.
They found Adrian Cole exactly where the photograph showed him.
Alive.
Bound.
Terrified.
Daniel Mercer was nowhere in the building.
Adrian refused to speak until Mara told him the kidnappers had left him behind.
Then he started talking too quickly.
He admitted Lucas had hired him to monitor Claire after she began searching financial records.
Lucas ordered him to recover her phone after the gala.
He denied breaking into Harry's study.
He denied sending the threatening wedding ring.
Most importantly, he denied knowing who had abducted him.
"Lucas didn't do this."
Mara watched him carefully.
"Why are you certain?"
Adrian looked toward the warehouse door as if expecting someone to return.
"Because Lucas is scared of the same people."
Claire's stomach tightened.
Adrian said Daniel Mercer had been managing forged trusts and shell companies for the Vale family for decades.
But Mercer stopped taking orders from Lucas after discovering evidence that could destroy multiple people, including Margaret Vale.
He began demanding more money.
Lucas tried to find him.
So did someone else.
"Who?"
Adrian shook his head.
"I never saw the boss."
He had heard only a name used by Mercer's intermediaries.
The Custodian.
Harry hated the theatrical sound of it.
Adrian did too.
"It's not a person, maybe."
"It might be a title."
Mara asked why Lucas had slapped Claire at the gala.
Adrian looked confused.
"He wasn't supposed to."
He explained that Lucas's plan was to get Claire upstairs, take the phone, and frighten her into signing a new trust document.
The public assault had ruined everything.
Claire remembered the recovered message.
I never lose control.
Lucas had lied even to himself.
By dawn, Adrian had signed a statement.
Mara secured additional warrants for Vale Foundation records.
The news broke before breakfast.
Financial investigators raided the foundation's downtown offices.
Television cameras surrounded the entrance.
Lucas appeared on the courthouse steps with his attorney and denied wrongdoing.
He called the slap "a deeply regrettable private incident."
Claire watched from Harry's living room.
Then Lucas looked directly into the cameras.
"My wife is being manipulated by people with long-standing grudges against my family."
Harry turned off the television.
"He means me."
Claire's phone rang.
This time the number was not hidden.
Lucas.
Her attorney had warned her not to answer.
She let it go to voicemail.
Thirty seconds later, the message arrived.
Lucas sounded different.
No anger.
No performance.
Only fear.
"Claire, listen to me."
"Do not trust Mercer."
"Do not trust my mother."
"And whatever Harry told you about your mother's accident, ask him where he was that night."
The recording ended.
May you like
Claire looked at her father.
Harry had gone completely still.
