Chapter 5 - The Man on the Balcony.

Harry reached the study before Claire could follow him.

He stopped her in the hallway with one raised hand.

"Stay behind the wall."

The security alarm continued its steady electronic warning through the house.

Harry moved toward the study with the controlled caution of a man who had spent years entering rooms without knowing who waited inside.

Claire had always known her father had been a detective before opening his private security firm.

She had never seen that part of him at work.

The study window stood open.

Rain dotted the hardwood floor.

The locked drawer containing her mother's photocopied will had been pulled out and emptied.

The page was gone.

Nothing else had been taken.

Harry checked the garden camera feed.

A hooded figure had crossed the rear lawn less than two minutes earlier.

The face was hidden.

The person knew exactly which window to use.

Claire felt sick.

"Lucas knows about this house."

Harry shook his head.

"So do a dozen people who worked security here over the years."

He replayed the footage frame by frame.

The intruder paused near the cedar fence and looked toward the camera.

For one instant, a wrist appeared beneath the sleeve.

There was a tattoo shaped like a broken compass.

Harry froze the image.

"I've seen that mark."

Claire waited.

Harry looked toward the rain-streaked window.

"At the hotel last night."

The rugged man on the balcony had not been Harry alone.

Before Claire's call, Harry had spotted a contract security worker near the service stairs wearing the same tattoo.

The man disappeared when Harry approached.

Harry had assumed he was hotel staff.

Now he knew better.

Claire sat down slowly.

"Someone was already watching me before Lucas hit me."

Harry nodded.

"Which means the slap may not have been the beginning."

The police arrived twenty minutes later and photographed the window, the drawer, and the muddy prints outside.

An officer asked Claire whether she believed Lucas had sent the intruder.

Claire wanted to say yes.

Instead she said the only thing she could prove.

"Lucas knew I had found financial documents."

That afternoon, Harry's attorney helped Claire request an emergency protective order.

Lucas's lawyers responded within an hour.

They accused Claire of removing confidential Vale Foundation records and threatened civil action.

The speed of the response told Harry they had prepared it in advance.

"They expected you to leave."

Claire looked at him.

"Or they planned to make me leave."

At five o'clock, a courier arrived at the front gate with a velvet jewelry box.

Inside was Claire's wedding ring.

She had left it on the hotel bathroom counter the night before.

A folded card rested beneath it.

Come home before your father gets hurt.

Claire's hands went numb.

Harry read the card once.

Then he photographed it and placed it inside an evidence bag.

"This changes things."

Claire's anger finally rose above her fear.

"No."

Harry looked at her.

"It proves what things already were."

She took her smartphone and opened the cloud folder linked to the emergency app.

The balcony recording was there.

So were several automatic backups from the past month.

Claire had never listened to them.

The app had captured audio whenever she triggered the shortcut during an argument.

One file was dated twelve days earlier.

Claire pressed play.

Lucas's voice filled the kitchen.

"Once she turns thirty, we move the shares and she never has to know."

Another male voice replied.

"Only if Mercer signs the replacement trust."

Claire stopped breathing.

Harry leaned closer to the phone.

The second voice continued.

"And if Harry Bennett starts asking questions?"

Lucas answered without hesitation.

"Then we make sure he has something bigger to worry about."

Claire looked at her father.

Outside, headlights appeared beyond the iron gate.

Its lights went dark.
