Chapter 6 - The Missing Ledger.

The black SUV remained across from Harry's gate for forty-three minutes.

It never entered the property.

It did not need to.

Its purpose was to be seen.

Harry photographed the license plate and sent it to the detective assigned to the break-in.

The plate came back registered to a rental company under a corporate account.

The account belonged to Northline Civic Partners.

Claire stared at the result and felt the last part of her disbelief disappear.

Lucas was no longer trying to persuade her to come home.

He was trying to remind her that he could reach her anywhere.

Harry contacted an old colleague named Detective Mara Ruiz, now working financial crimes.

Mara listened to the recordings at the kitchen table without reacting until Lucas mentioned replacing the trust.

Then she asked to hear that section again.

"Do you have the original files?"

Claire nodded.

"They're backed up automatically."

Mara looked relieved.

"Do not edit them."

"Do not forward them to anyone except counsel or law enforcement."

"And do not tell Lucas what else you found."

Claire almost laughed.

"I don't know what else I found."

Mara looked toward Harry.

"Then that is what we need to discover before he does."

The next clue came from an unexpected place.

At seven that evening, Claire received an email from a woman named Julia Park, the Vale Foundation's former accounting director.

Julia had resigned eight months earlier without explanation.

The subject line contained only two words.

YOU REMEMBER?

Claire opened the message.

Julia wrote that she had tried to warn Claire at a Christmas dinner the previous year.

Claire remembered the evening.

Julia had approached her near the coatroom and asked whether Claire personally approved donor transfers.

Lucas had appeared before Claire could answer and pulled her away.

Two weeks later, Julia was gone.

The email contained no accusation.

It contained an address and a time.

Tomorrow, 10:00 a.m.

Public library, east reading room.

Harry wanted police nearby.

Mara agreed.

The next morning, Claire entered the library alone while Harry and Mara waited outside.

Julia sat at a corner table wearing a baseball cap and dark glasses.

She looked exhausted.

"I am sorry."

Claire sat across from her.

"For what?"

Julia slid a small flash drive across the table.

"For waiting until he hit you before I believed you would finally leave."

Claire's throat tightened.

Julia had copied internal ledgers before resigning.

She believed foundation donations had been moved through Northline Civic Partners to finance the Vale family's private waterfront acquisition.

Several transactions had been authorized under Claire's name.

"Why mine?"

Julia looked at her with painful sympathy.

"Because your mother's trust was the legal obstacle."

"If the transfers looked like they came from you, they could argue you had already benefited from the deal."

Claire felt the room grow distant.

"They were building a case that I sold my own inheritance."

Julia nodded.

"And there is more."

She opened a notebook and wrote a date.

September 14, six years earlier.

Claire's wedding day.

On that morning, a document called the Bennett Trust Amendment had been notarized.

Claire had spent that entire morning surrounded by bridesmaids, photographers, and her father.

She had never seen the amendment.

Julia lowered her voice.

"The original ledger records a payment to Daniel Mercer that same day."

Claire looked at the flash drive.

"Where is Mercer?"

Julia's face changed.

She stared over Claire's shoulder.

A man in a dark coat had entered the reading room.

On his wrist was a broken-compass tattoo.
