Chapter 9 - The Room Below the Cellar.

Claire had been eight years old when her mother died in a car crash on a rain-slick highway.

Harry had told her the brakes failed.

He had never told her police briefly considered sabotage.

The evidence was inconclusive.

A mechanic had reported damage to a brake line, but a second expert called it ordinary corrosion.

Daniel Mercer had notarized Rebecca's estate documents two days earlier.

Then he disappeared from Harry's investigation before being located months later in another state.

No charges were filed.

Harry had buried the suspicion because he had no proof and a grieving child to raise.

Claire felt betrayed anyway.

"You should have told me."

"Yes."

Harry did not defend himself.

That made it harder to stay angry.

"I thought I was protecting you from a ghost."

"Instead, I let the ghost walk into your marriage."

They searched Harry's archived case boxes in the basement.

Most contained old reports, photographs, and insurance correspondence.

One box was missing.

Harry remembered storing it behind a false wall in the wine cellar after receiving anonymous threats years earlier.

They removed the wooden rack and found a narrow metal door.

Behind it was a small concrete storage room Claire had never known existed.

The missing case box sat on a shelf.

So did something Harry had not placed there.

A fresh white envelope lay on top.

Claire stopped at the doorway.

"When were you last in here?"

"At least five years ago."

Harry put on gloves before touching the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed Rebecca Bennett standing beside Margaret Vale at a waterfront planning meeting months before the crash.

Between them stood Daniel Mercer.

On the back, someone had written three words.

THEY ALL KNEW.

Claire's skin prickled.

The intruder who stole the will copy had been inside the study.

Had he also entered this room?

Harry checked the shelves.

Nothing else appeared disturbed.

Inside the old case box, they found Rebecca's appointment calendar.

One week before her death, she had written a private meeting with "M.V." at the Harbor House restaurant.

Margaret Vale.

Claire called Evelyn Grant, who had known both women.

Evelyn remembered the meeting.

Rebecca had been furious afterward.

She told Evelyn that the Vales were pressuring her to sell her waterfront shares below market value.

Rebecca refused.

Two weeks later, she was dead.

Harry closed his eyes.

"I never knew Margaret was involved."

Claire felt anger spreading through her with frightening clarity.

Lucas had not entered her life by accident.

At minimum, his family had known exactly who she was and exactly what she owned.

Mara arrived with a warrant team that afternoon.

She examined the hidden room and took the photograph into evidence.

Then she brought news of her own.

The tattooed man had been identified.

His name was Adrian Cole.

He worked for a private investigations contractor frequently hired by Vale Industries.

Mara had obtained traffic-camera footage placing his SUV near Harry's house and the library.

"Can you arrest him?"

"We are trying to find him."

Claire's phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

It showed Adrian Cole sitting in a chair, his hands tied behind his back.

His face was bruised.

A handwritten sign hung from his neck.

ASK LUCAS WHO HE IS AFRAID OF.

Harry immediately told Claire not to respond.

A second message arrived.

This one contained a location pin.

An abandoned warehouse near the waterfront.

May you like

Then one final sentence appeared.

COME ALONE IF YOU WANT MERCER.
