Chapter 11 - The Name on the Transfer.

Harry did not avoid Claire's question.
He told her exactly where he had been the night Rebecca died.
He had been following Daniel Mercer.
That was the secret he had carried for twenty-two years.
Rebecca had called Harry from her office that afternoon and said someone had altered documents connected to her waterfront shares.
She believed Mercer was involved.
Harry left work early and followed Mercer to a hotel across town.
While Harry watched the hotel, Rebecca drove home alone.
Her car crashed forty minutes later.
"If I had gone to her instead, she might still be alive."
Claire saw the guilt on his face and understood why Lucas had chosen that particular wound.
It was not proof of wrongdoing.
It was a truth sharp enough to make another lie believable.
"Did you ever tell the police?"
"Everything."
Harry opened the old file and showed her his statement from the original investigation.
The timestamps matched phone records.
Claire felt relief and anger at the same time.
Lucas knew enough about her family to weaponize grief.
That afternoon, Mara arrived with preliminary findings from the Vale Foundation raid.
Investigators had traced the four-million-dollar transfer through three shell companies.
The money eventually landed in a holding account used to purchase options on the waterfront property.
The authorization carried Claire's forged signature.
But another name appeared on the internal approval chain.
Margaret Vale.
Claire was not surprised.
Then Mara showed her a second document.
A payment of nine hundred thousand dollars had been made to Daniel Mercer eighteen months earlier.
The memo line read: FINAL CUSTODIAN SETTLEMENT.
Harry leaned forward.
"Custodian."
Mara nodded.
The title did not refer to an unknown mastermind.
It referred to a private legal arrangement.
Mercer had served as custodian of the Bennett trust records after Rebecca's death.
He had physical possession of the original documents.
That gave him the power to alter, hide, or replace them.
The mystery suddenly became less theatrical and more dangerous.
Mercer was not hiding from a secret organization.
He was hiding because everyone needed what he possessed.
Mara had one more discovery.
The payment account was jointly controlled by Margaret and Lucas.
Claire felt her chest tighten.
Lucas had not been dragged into his mother's scheme.
He had participated.
The question was how early.
Mara placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Lucas and Mercer leaving a restaurant seven years earlier.
Seven years.
Claire had met Lucas six and a half years earlier.
Harry looked at her.
Claire did the math without speaking.
Lucas knew Mercer before he knew her.
Her marriage had begun after the meetings started.
A knock sounded at the front door.
Two uniformed officers immediately moved into the hall.
A woman stood outside holding a sealed evidence envelope.
She identified herself as a clerk from Evelyn Grant's former law chambers.
Evelyn had instructed her to deliver it if anything happened to her.
Claire's heart stopped.
"What happened to Evelyn?"
The clerk looked confused.
"Nothing, as far as I know."
"She gave me this months ago."
Inside was an old cassette tape and a handwritten note from Rebecca Bennett.
Harry recognized the handwriting.
The note contained one sentence.
If Daniel changes the trust, Evelyn has the recording.
Claire looked at the cassette.
Mara found a player in Harry's storage room.
They pressed play.
Rebecca's voice filled the room, faint and grainy.
Then Margaret Vale spoke.
"Sell the shares, Rebecca."
Rebecca answered.
"No."

Margaret's next sentence turned Claire's blood cold.
"Then I will make sure your daughter signs them away someday."
