Chapter 7 - The Guest Who Remembered.

Julia stood so quickly that her chair struck the floor.
The man with the tattoo turned toward the sound.
Claire saw recognition in his eyes.
He began walking toward them.
Mara appeared through the opposite doorway almost immediately.
"Police. Stop where you are."
The man ran.
He knocked over a book cart and disappeared through the emergency exit before Mara could reach him.
Harry followed from outside but lost him in the parking structure behind the library.
The encounter lasted less than thirty seconds.
It changed everything.
The tattooed man had now appeared at the hotel, Harry's house, and the library.
Someone was tracking Claire's movements with disturbing precision.
Mara took Julia into protective custody for a formal statement.
The flash drive went into evidence.
Claire and Harry returned home under police escort.
For the first time since the gala, Harry looked tired.
"You can still walk away from the financial side of this."
Claire stared at him.
"You mean let Lucas keep using my name?"
"I mean let investigators do the dangerous part."
Claire understood the difference.
"I am not going back to his house."
"I am not meeting him alone."
"But I am done pretending I do not have a right to know what he did."
Harry nodded.
That evening, one of the gala guests called Claire.
Her name was Evelyn Grant, a retired appellate judge who had known Claire's mother.
Evelyn had been standing twenty feet away when Lucas struck her.
"I should have crossed that room immediately."
Claire did not know what to say.
Evelyn continued.
"Instead, I watched everyone calculate whether helping you would cost them something."
Her voice shook with anger at herself.
"I am sorry."
Claire sat beside the kitchen window.
"Why are you calling now?"
"Because I remembered something Lucas said before the slap."
Evelyn had been near the donor table when she overheard Lucas arguing with Margaret.
Margaret had whispered that Claire could not be allowed to leave with her phone.
Lucas replied that the phone was "already handled."
Claire looked at the dark smartphone in her hand.
It seemed to weigh twice as much.
Mara had checked it for ordinary spyware and found nothing.
Harry called a digital forensics specialist.
The specialist discovered a hidden device-management profile installed three months earlier.
It allowed remote access to location data, copied messages, and certain cloud credentials.
Claire felt physically ill.
Lucas had not merely watched her.
He had built a map of her fear.
The specialist removed the profile but preserved a forensic image.
Then he found something else.
A deleted text thread had been restored from the phone's backup.
The messages were between Lucas and a contact saved only as D.M.
One message had been sent the night before the gala.
LUCAS: She found Harbor.
D.M.: Then you should have moved sooner.
LUCAS: Tomorrow night fixes it.
D.M.: Do not lose control in public.
Lucas had responded with a single line.
LUCAS: I never lose control.
Claire read the words twice.
The irony should have felt satisfying.
It did not.
The final recovered message had been sent at 9:16 p.m., four minutes after Lucas slapped her.
LUCAS: Plan B.
D.M. replied one minute later.
D.M.: Take the phone.
Harry looked up from the screen.
"He was not following you onto that balcony to apologize."
Claire remembered Lucas reaching for her wrist.
Then she remembered the exact way he had looked at the smartphone.
May you like
A chill moved down her spine.
He had wanted the evidence before he even knew what she had recorded.
