Chapter 13 - The Chandelier Falls Dark.

Harbor House had been closed for renovation for nearly a year.
It stood at the edge of the waterfront property Claire was supposed to inherit, an old restaurant wrapped in scaffolding and plastic sheeting.
Mara refused to let Claire enter without a tactical plan.
Claire refused to let Lucas become the only person negotiating her mother's legacy.
A compromise was reached.
Claire and Lucas would enter through the front under surveillance.
Harry and officers would remain within seconds of the building.
Lucas arrived wearing a bulletproof vest beneath his coat.
He avoided Claire's eyes.
"You don't have to do this."
She almost laughed.
"You lost the right to protect me when you decided to own me."
Lucas flinched.
At 11:59 p.m., the front doors unlocked remotely.
Inside, emergency work lights cast long white shadows across dusty tables.
An old crystal chandelier still hung above the central dining room.
Claire thought of the gala and felt her cheek remember the slap.
A speaker crackled.
Daniel Mercer's voice filled the room.
"Claire Bennett."
She looked upward.
"Show yourself."
"Not yet."
Lucas whispered that Mercer liked control.
Claire turned on him.
"You would know."
The speaker clicked again.
Mercer instructed Lucas to place his phone on a table.
Claire did the same.
Then a projector lit the far wall.
Old scanned documents appeared one after another.
Rebecca's original trust.
The forged amendment.
Foundation transfers.
Emails from Margaret.
Emails from Lucas.
Finally, a video recording appeared.
It showed Margaret Vale sitting across from Mercer in a private office two years earlier.
"Claire cannot reach thirty with full voting control."
Mercer asked what she wanted him to do.
Margaret answered calmly.
"Whatever we should have finished when Rebecca was alive."
Lucas stared at the screen.
"I never saw this."
Claire believed him because terror stripped the calculation from his face.
Mercer's voice returned.
"Your mother was willing to repeat history."
Lucas looked toward the dark balcony above the dining room.
"Then why send for me?"
A figure stepped into view on the upper level.
Daniel Mercer was smaller than Claire imagined.
Gray-haired.
Thin.
Almost ordinary.
He held the missing flash drive in one hand.
"Because you are the proof she failed."
Lucas swore.
Mercer explained that Margaret had ordered Claire's car tampered with two months earlier.
Adrian Cole had refused and warned Lucas indirectly.
Lucas responded by increasing surveillance on Claire, not to protect her but to protect himself from exposure.
Claire turned slowly toward him.
"You knew someone might hurt me."
Lucas said nothing.
"You knew."
His silence answered.
Claire's anger finally broke through her controlled breathing.
"And you still hit me because I embarrassed you."
Lucas looked down.
The chandelier lights suddenly went dark.
A shot cracked somewhere outside.
Everyone froze.
Mercer disappeared from the balcony.
Mara shouted through Claire's concealed earpiece.
"Get down."
Claire dropped behind a heavy table.
Lucas crouched beside her.
The front doors slammed shut automatically.
Smoke began pouring from the kitchen corridor.
Harry's voice came through the earpiece.
"Claire, answer me."
"I'm here."
"Stay low."
A figure ran through the smoke toward the side exit.
Lucas grabbed Claire's arm.
She ripped free.
"Never touch me again."
Then the old chandelier above them creaked.
May you like
Claire looked up.
One of its support cables had been cut.
