Chapter 2 - The Voice Behind the Glass.

Lucas stopped halfway through the balcony door when he saw Harry standing ten feet from Claire.

For the first time that evening, the confidence left his face.

Claire had never seen fear arrive so quietly in another person.

Harry did not rush forward.

He simply walked to his daughter and placed himself between her and Lucas.

"Claire, stand behind me."

Lucas gave a short laugh that sounded forced.

"This is a private matter."

Harry studied him.

"You made it public when you hit her in front of three hundred witnesses."

Lucas's jaw tightened.

"She provoked me."

Claire felt something inside her collapse at those words.

Not because they surprised her.

Because part of her had expected them.

Harry slowly removed his suit jacket from the chair where he had left it earlier that evening.

Claire realized he had been at the hotel before she called.

"You were here?"

Harry nodded without taking his eyes off Lucas.

"You texted me this afternoon and said you were afraid to go home after the gala."

Claire had almost forgotten that message.

She had typed it after finding a locked folder on Lucas's laptop and deleted it minutes later.

Harry had not forgotten.

He had driven to the hotel and waited downstairs, unwilling to interfere until she asked.

Lucas's eyes shifted toward Claire.

"You called him before tonight?"

The question carried more threat than confusion.

Harry stepped slightly closer.

"Choose your next words carefully."

Lucas looked past him toward the ballroom where guests were pretending not to stare through the glass.

"This is ridiculous."

He reached for Claire's wrist.

Harry caught his arm before his fingers touched her.

He did not twist it.

He did not strike him.

He simply held it still.

Lucas discovered that he could not pull away.

"Take your hand off me."

"Take one more step toward my daughter and I call the police from this balcony."

Lucas's eyes hardened.

"You think I care about a family argument?"

Harry released him.

"No."

He pulled out his own phone.

"I think you care about what was recorded."

Lucas froze.

Claire stared at her father.

Harry pointed toward her smartphone.

"Your call connected through the emergency recording app I installed last month."

Claire's breath caught.

Harry had insisted on the app after Lucas had smashed a lamp during an argument and later claimed it had fallen.

She had never activated it herself.

Harry had shown her one shortcut on the lock screen.

Tonight, in panic, she had pressed it without realizing.

The recording had begun before she dialed him.

It had captured Lucas entering the balcony.

It had captured every word.

Lucas looked toward Claire's phone as if it had transformed into a weapon.

"Give me that."

Claire stepped backward.

Harry moved forward.

"Try."

Lucas stopped.

The glass door opened behind him.

Margaret Vale appeared, still wearing the elegant smile she used for photographers.

"Enough."

Her gaze moved to Claire's cheek and then immediately away from it.

"The foundation chairman is asking questions."

Harry's eyes narrowed.

"Good."

Margaret ignored him.

She spoke to Claire in the gentle tone people used when they wanted witnesses to remember them as reasonable.

"You are emotional."

"Go upstairs, wash your face, and we will discuss this privately."

Claire almost obeyed.

Six years of conditioning moved through her body before her mind could stop it.

Then her phone vibrated.

A notification appeared on the screen.

UPLOAD COMPLETE.

Harry saw it.

Lucas saw it too.

May you like

The color drained from Lucas's face.

Claire looked at him and understood that the recording was not the only thing he feared was on her phone.
