Chapter 4 - The Locked Study.

By sunrise, Claire understood that the slap had opened a door Lucas had spent years keeping closed.

Harry made coffee while she sat at the kitchen table wrapped in an old gray sweater.

The red mark on her cheek had darkened overnight.

Every time Harry looked at it, his mouth tightened.

He never asked why she had stayed.

He asked what she needed next.

Claire told him about the HARBOR folder.

She described the transfers, the forged signature, and the donor files.

Harry listened without interrupting.

When she finished, he opened a locked drawer in his study and removed a thin envelope.

Claire recognized her mother's handwriting before he said a word.

"Where did you get that?"

"It came to me six months ago."

The envelope contained a photocopy of one page from Rebecca Bennett's missing will.

Claire's mother had owned a minority share in a waterfront redevelopment company long before her death.

The shares had been placed in trust for Claire until her thirtieth birthday.

Claire turned thirty in nine weeks.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Harry's face filled with regret.

"Because I couldn't verify it."

"And because Lucas's family handled the estate litigation after your mother died."

Claire looked at the copy again.

At the bottom was the same notary stamp from Lucas's message.

The name was Daniel Mercer.

Harry had spent weeks trying to locate him.

Mercer had disappeared from public records almost ten years earlier.

"What does this have to do with Lucas?"

Harry pointed to the redevelopment company name.

Northline Harbor Holdings.

Claire felt cold despite the warm kitchen.

Northline Civic Partners was the company that had received the four-million-dollar foundation transfer.

The names were too similar to be coincidence.

Harry opened his laptop and showed her old corporate filings.

Northline Harbor had gone through a series of mergers.

Its most valuable remaining asset was a block of waterfront land now worth nearly sixty million dollars.

If Claire inherited her mother's shares, she could block any sale.

Lucas's family had been trying to acquire the entire property for years.

Claire stared at the screen.

"You think he married me for land?"

Harry shook his head.

"I don't know why he married you."

"But I know his family knew what you would inherit."

A familiar shame rose in Claire's chest.

She hated that she still wanted Harry to tell her Lucas had once loved her.

Harry seemed to understand without being asked.

"People can love someone and still choose to use them."

That answer hurt more because it did not let her escape into a simple lie.

Claire's phone rang.

The caller was Margaret Vale.

Claire let it ring twice before answering on speaker.

"Claire, darling, we are all very worried about you."

Harry rolled his eyes but stayed silent.

Margaret continued.

"Lucas is devastated."

Claire looked at her bruised cheek reflected in the dark window.

"He looked devastated when he hit me."

A pause followed.

Margaret's voice lost some of its softness.

"You need to understand the consequences of making accusations."

"Is that a threat?"

"It is advice."

Claire heard a faint click in the background.

Then a man's voice whispered something near Margaret.

Claire could not make out the words.

Harry could.

He reached for a notepad and wrote one name.

MERCER.

Claire's pulse accelerated.

Margaret returned to the line.

"Come home, Claire."

"We can fix this before outsiders become involved."

Claire stared at Harry's note.

"No."

Margaret inhaled sharply.

"Then don't blame us for what happens next."

The call ended.

Three seconds later, Harry's home security alarm sounded.

Someone had opened the locked study window.
