Chapter 12 - The Trap at Midnight.

The cassette changed the investigation overnight.
It did not prove Margaret caused Rebecca's death.
It proved motive, knowledge, and a plan reaching back decades.
Mara obtained a warrant for Margaret's financial records and residence.
Margaret responded by disappearing.
Her driver found her car abandoned at a private airfield before dawn.
Lucas claimed he did not know where she had gone.
For once, Claire believed him.
His fear on the voicemail had sounded too real.
Then Lucas did something unexpected.
He asked for immunity.
Through his attorney, he offered to provide records proving Mercer forged the Bennett Trust Amendment and Margaret directed the financial transfers.
In exchange, he wanted reduced charges and protection from prosecution connected to the foundation scheme.
Claire stared at Mara.
"He is going to sacrifice his mother."
Mara corrected her.
"He is going to sacrifice whoever keeps him out of prison."
The meeting was arranged at the district attorney's office after midnight to avoid reporters.
Lucas arrived carrying a black leather portfolio.
Claire was not supposed to attend.
She insisted on watching remotely from another room with Harry.
Lucas looked ten years older than he had at the gala.
He opened the portfolio and removed copies of emails, trust drafts, and account instructions.
One email from Margaret ordered Mercer to create an amendment transferring Claire's voting rights to a Vale-controlled entity after her thirtieth birthday.
Another showed Lucas asking whether Claire's signature could be "reproduced cleanly."
Harry swore under his breath.
Claire felt strangely calm.
The truth had become too large for shock.
Then Lucas produced a flash drive.
"This is the original HARBOR archive."
Mara asked why he had kept it.
Lucas looked down.
"Insurance."
The word summarized his entire family.
Before investigators could open the drive, every light in the building went out.
Emergency power flickered on five seconds later.
An alarm sounded in the parking garage.
Mara's radio erupted with voices.
A vehicle had crashed through the lower security gate.
Harry stood immediately.
"Claire, stay here."
She hated the command but understood it this time.
The camera feed from Lucas's interview room froze.
When it returned, Lucas was standing with his chair overturned.
The black leather portfolio was gone.
So was the flash drive.
The door had never opened.
Mara stared at the screen.
"Impossible."
Then a technician noticed the ceiling panel above the interview room hanging slightly crooked.
Someone had entered through the maintenance crawlspace during the blackout.
Lucas backed against the wall.
For the first time, Claire saw him afraid without anger to hide behind.
A message arrived on Claire's phone from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of the missing flash drive.
Beneath it was one sentence.
YOUR MOTHER LEFT YOU MORE THAN SHARES.
Another message followed.
MIDNIGHT TOMORROW.
HARBOR HOUSE.
BRING LUCAS.
Harry read it over Claire's shoulder.
"No."
Claire looked at the frozen image of Lucas on the monitor.
"Whoever has that drive already knows the whole story."
Harry's voice hardened.
"That does not mean we walk into their trap."
Mara entered the room.
"We may not have to."
Investigators had traced the blackout breach to a contractor badge issued that morning under a false name.
May you like
The photograph on the badge belonged to Daniel Mercer.
After twenty-two years of shadows, Mercer had finally stepped into view.
