Chapter 10: The Chosen Village

Thanksgiving that year was nothing short of magical.
In the past, the holiday had been a grueling marathon of managing Eleanor’s criticisms and navigating Chloe’s mood swings. This year, Mark and Lena decided to redefine what family meant to them.
They invited their closest friends—a couple from Mark’s firm who had young children, and Lena’s best friend, Sarah, who had flown in from Chicago. The house was filled with genuine laughter, the smell of roasted turkey, and the joyful chaos of children running through the halls.
Lena stood by the kitchen island, pouring wine for Sarah, completely relaxed in her own home. There was no walking on eggshells. There was no fear of being judged for how the stuffing turned out or how the table was set.
Mark watched his wife from across the room. He saw her throw her head back in genuine laughter at a joke Sarah made. He realized then that family wasn't strictly determined by bloodlines or obligation. Family was the village you chose—the people who respected you, uplifted you, and protected your peace.

As they gathered around the dining table, Mark raised his glass. "To good food, great friends, and the peace of a happy home," he toasted.
"Cheers," the table echoed, the sound ringing through the house like a blessing.
