Chapter 12: The Yellow School Bus

Late August brought a crisp edge to the Seattle mornings, signaling the start of a new milestone: Lily’s first day of kindergarten.
The house was buzzing with a mixture of nervous energy and excitement. Lily sat at the kitchen island, kicking her feet in her new light-up sneakers while Lena carefully braided her hair. James, now a sturdy toddler, was busy dropping Cheerios onto the floor for the imaginary dog he desperately wanted.
Mark leaned against the counter, sipping his coffee as he watched his family. He couldn't help but marvel at the little girl before him. The terrified, trembling child who had hidden against his legs three years ago was entirely gone. In her place was a confident, vibrant five-year-old who knew her home was a sanctuary and her parents were her absolute protectors.
"Are you ready, bug?" Mark asked, setting his mug down.
Lily hopped off the stool, grabbing her bright yellow backpack covered in daisies. "I'm ready! Can James come to school too?"
"Not yet," Lena laughed, hoisting the squirming toddler onto her hip. "He has to learn how to keep his Cheerios on the table first."
They walked as a family down the driveway to the bus stop at the corner. When the massive yellow bus pulled up, its air brakes hissing loudly, Lily didn't hesitate. She hugged her mother, gave James a sloppy kiss on the cheek, and high-fived her father.
"Have the best day, sweetheart," Mark said, his throat unexpectedly tight.

"I will, Daddy!"
Mark and Lena stood shoulder-to-shoulder, watching the bus disappear down the tree-lined street. Mark reached out, taking Lena’s free hand and squeezing it tight. They had built a safe world for her to grow in, and now, she was ready to step out into a larger one.
