Chapter 9: The Chance Encounter

A few weeks before Thanksgiving, Mark took Lily to the local grocery store to pick up some baking supplies. They were in the baking aisle, debating between chocolate chips and sprinkles, when a familiar voice called out.
"Mark?"
He turned to see his sister, Chloe, standing by the flour display. She looked tired, her usual air of arrogance replaced by a hesitant, awkward posture.
Mark immediately stepped in front of Lily, his protective instincts flaring. "Chloe."
"It's been almost a year," she said, taking a tentative step forward. "Mom is... she's really not doing well, Mark. She misses you."
"Chloe, stop," Mark said, his voice low but carrying absolute authority. "We established a boundary. You do not get to ambush me in a grocery store."
"I just want to see my niece," Chloe pleaded, looking past him at Lily.
Lily peered around her father's leg. She looked at Chloe with blank curiosity, entirely failing to recognize the woman. "Daddy, who is that?" Lily asked loudly.
The question hit Chloe like a physical blow. She flinched, stepping back.

"Nobody, bug. Just someone we used to know," Mark said gently to his daughter. He looked back at his sister, his expression firm. "Do not approach us again, Chloe."
He took Lily's hand and guided her down the aisle, leaving his past standing in the flour section, finally realizing the true cost of their actions.
