Chapter 14: The Foundation of Peace

As the home stabilized, so did Mark’s career. The endless, exhausting cycle of managing his mother's manufactured crises had previously drained his energy, leaving him easily agitated at work. Now, without that heavy emotional anchor, he thrived.
He was promoted to senior partner at his law firm just before James turned three. The promotion meant more responsibility, but it also meant more control over his schedule.
One evening, Mark sat in his corner office overlooking the Seattle skyline. The sun was setting, casting a golden hue over the Puget Sound. His colleague, David, popped his head into the doorway.
"We're grabbing drinks to celebrate the Harrison settlement, Mark. You in?"
"I appreciate it, David, but I'm heading home," Mark replied, packing his briefcase.
David chuckled. "You always head home. What's your secret, man? You bill the most hours, but you're never here past six."

Mark paused, looking at a framed photo on his desk of Lena, Lily, and James at the beach. "My secret is that I actually want to go home," Mark said honestly. "I protect my time there because it's the best part of my day."
He realized on the drive back that peace wasn't just the absence of conflict; it was a strong, proactive foundation. His family gave him the grounding he needed to be a better lawyer, a better husband, and a better man.
