Chapter 17: The Sanctuary

Their tenth wedding anniversary fell on a unseasonably warm evening in early September. Rather than booking a table at a crowded, upscale restaurant downtown, Mark and Lena chose to celebrate in the exact place they loved most: their own backyard.
After Lily and James were tucked into bed, Mark carried two glasses of red wine out to the patio. He handed one to Lena, who was curled up on the outdoor sofa under a soft blanket, looking up at the clear, starry sky. The string lights they had hung around the pergola cast a warm, golden glow over the deck.
"Happy anniversary," Mark said softly, clinking his glass against hers.
"Ten years," Lena smiled, taking a sip. "It feels like a lifetime ago that we were just two kids trying to figure everything out."
Mark sat beside her, wrapping his arm around her shoulders and pulling her close. He looked back at the house. Through the sliding glass doors, he could see the kitchen where the defining moment of their marriage had taken place. The room that had once been the site of their greatest trauma was now filled with the warmth of countless family dinners, late-night talks, and chaotic baking sessions.
"We built a good life, Lena," Mark said, his voice thick with emotion. "A really good life."

"We built a fortress," she corrected gently, resting her head against his chest. "A place where our kids will only ever know what it feels like to be safe."
Mark kissed the top of her head, closing his eyes as he listened to the quiet rustle of the wind through the trees. They didn't need extravagant trips or grand gestures to validate their love. Their greatest achievement was the absolute peace that radiated through the walls of their home.
