Chapter 2: The Aftermath

The silence that followed Mark’s command was deafening. Eleanor’s face morphed from shock to absolute fury. Her hand dropped from her reddened cheek, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. She looked at Mark as if he were a stranger, entirely incapable of comprehending that her own son had just drawn a hard line in the sand.
"You will regret this, Mark," Eleanor hissed, her voice dripping with venom. "You are choosing her over your own mother."
"I am choosing my family," Mark replied, his voice terrifyingly calm. He didn't blink. He didn't waver. He just pointed toward the hallway. "Get your coats and leave my house. Now."
Chloe, rubbing her own jaw, glared at Lena, who was still weeping quietly by the stove. "You're tearing this family apart," Chloe spat.
Mark took a threatening half-step forward. "Not another word. Out."
Realizing they had lost their grip on him, Eleanor turned on her heel, grabbing her purse from the kitchen island. Chloe followed close behind. The heavy thud of the front door slamming shut vibrated through the floorboards, leaving behind a sudden, heavy stillness.

Mark exhaled a shaky breath, the adrenaline slowly draining from his system. He set Lily down gently on her feet. "Lily, bug, can you go to your room and pick out a book for us to read?" he asked softly. The little girl nodded, wiping her tear-stained cheeks, and scurried down the hall.
Once they were alone, Mark closed the distance between him and his wife. He wrapped his arms around Lena, pulling her gently against his chest. She finally let go of the spatula, burying her face in his shoulder as the stifled sobs broke free. He held her tight, resting his chin on top of her head, silently vowing that he would never let anyone hurt her again.
