Chapter 4: Severing Ties

The next morning, sunlight streamed through the bedroom window, casting a warm glow over the hardwood floors. For the first time in years, Mark felt a profound sense of clarity. The lingering guilt that usually accompanied his mother’s tantrums was completely gone, replaced by a fierce, protective instinct.
He took the day off from the firm. After making pancakes for Lena and Lily, he retreated to his home office and closed the door. He picked up his phone and opened his messages. There were already dozens of texts from his mother and sister—a mix of guilt trips, demands for apologies, and vicious insults directed at Lena.
He didn't read them all. He didn't need to.
Mark drafted a single, concise email to his mother, copying his sister.
Mom,
What you did yesterday was unforgivable. You physically assaulted my pregnant wife and traumatized my daughter. I will not tolerate abuse in my home or toward my family. Do not contact us again. Do not come to our house. If you attempt to circumvent this boundary, I will involve the authorities. We are done.
Mark.

He hit send. Then, he went into his phone settings and blocked both of their numbers. He did the same on his social media accounts. It was a digital severing, a necessary amputation to save the rest of the body.
When he walked back out into the living room, Lily was sitting on the rug playing with her blocks, and Lena was smiling at him from the couch. Mark took a deep breath. The air in his home already felt lighter.
