Chapter 5: A Safe Haven

Two months melted away, bringing the harsh Seattle winter into a mild, blooming spring. The house had transformed. Without the looming threat of Eleanor’s unannounced visits or Chloe’s passive-aggressive remarks, a deep, abiding peace settled over the family.

Lena’s anxiety, which had plagued her for the first two trimesters, vanished. She glowed, her belly round and heavy, as she spent her weekends painting the nursery a soft, calming sage green. Mark was entirely present, leaving work exactly at five o'clock every day to be with his girls.

One Saturday afternoon, Mark was in the backyard pushing Lily on the swing while Lena watched from the patio chair.

"Higher, Daddy, higher!" Lily giggled, kicking her little legs toward the sky.

Mark pushed her gently, laughing along with her. He glanced over at Lena. She was resting her hands on her stomach, a serene, genuine smile on her face. There were no shadows in her eyes anymore.

"You know," Lena said as Mark walked over to hand her a glass of water, "I haven't thought about them in weeks."

"Neither have I," Mark admitted, sitting on the edge of her lounger. And it was true. The space his mother and sister used to occupy in his mind had been entirely replaced by the joy of his immediate family. By enforcing the boundary, he hadn't lost a family; he had saved his own.
