Chapter 6: The Arrival

The first contraction hit just after midnight on a rainy Tuesday.
Mark woke instantly to the sound of Lena’s sharp intake of breath. Within an hour, they were navigating the slick roads to the hospital, an excited but sleepy Lily buckled into her car seat in the back.
The labor ward was quiet and dimly lit, a stark contrast to the chaos they had endured months prior. Mark stayed by Lena’s side through every agonizing contraction, holding her hand, wiping her brow, and whispering words of encouragement. There was no outside interference, no toxic family members waiting in the lobby to demand attention. It was just the three of them, waiting for the fourth.
At 6:42 AM, as the first rays of dawn broke through the gray Seattle clouds, a strong, healthy cry pierced the delivery room.
"It's a boy," the doctor announced with a warm smile, placing the screaming, wriggling infant onto Lena’s chest.
Tears streamed down Lena’s face—this time, tears of pure, unadulterated joy. Mark leaned down, kissing Lena’s forehead before resting his cheek against his newborn son's tiny head.
Later that morning, Lily was brought into the room to meet her new brother. She climbed onto the edge of the hospital bed, her eyes wide with wonder as she looked at the tiny baby wrapped in a striped blanket.

"He's so little," Lily whispered.
"He is," Mark said, wrapping his arm around his daughter. He looked at his wife, who was gazing back at him with a love so deep it anchored his soul. They were safe. They were happy. They were whole. The storm was completely behind them, and in its wake, they had built a beautiful, unbreakable life.
