Chapter 10 - Room 417.

The recording continued.

Patricia’s voice sounded tense.

“I agreed to delay the transfer, not remove a newborn.”

Eleanor answered calmly.

“You agreed to solve a problem.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“Tonight, it is.”

Daniel looked away from the screen.

Hannah held Nora tighter.

Claire watched every second.

Patricia had not sounded like a willing partner.

She sounded trapped.

Eleanor spoke again.

“You owe this family more than you remember.”

Patricia replied, “I remember exactly what I owe.”

The recording ended.

Owen checked the file information.

“It was recorded at 9:18 tonight.”

“Who recorded it?” Emily asked.

No one knew.

Then the laptop displayed a notification.

A live audio connection had opened.

Static filled the speakers.

Claire leaned closer.

“Patricia?”

Nothing.

Then a whisper answered.

“Yes.”

Emily gasped.

Owen raised a hand for silence.

“Where are you?”

“I cannot tell you.”

“Are you safe?”

“For now.”

Claire moved closer to the laptop.

“Why did you move Nora?”

“Because Victor’s man was already on the floor.”

“Victor left before the second move.”

“I know.”

“Then who were you protecting her from?”

Patricia hesitated.

“Arthur Bell.”

The hospital president.

Owen swore softly.

Claire remembered that Bell had supposedly been at a fundraiser downtown.

“Bell is involved?”

“He gave Eleanor the access override.”

“Why?”

“Money.”

The answer was painfully simple.

Whitmore Foundation funding kept several hospital programs alive.

Arthur Bell had spent years boasting about Eleanor’s generosity.

Patricia continued.

“Bell told me to make the transfer look routine.”

“Why did you agree?” Claire asked.

Silence followed.

Then Patricia said, “Because two years ago, I followed another order I should have refused.”

Hannah’s face changed.

“What order?”

Patricia’s voice broke.

“I released your private medical schedule to Eleanor’s office.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Patricia continued quickly.

“I did not know what she intended to do with it.”

Hannah whispered, “Did she hurt my first baby?”

“No.”

Patricia answered immediately.

“I have no evidence of that.”

Claire watched Hannah absorb the words.

Patricia’s guilt was real, but the worst suspicion remained unproven.

“What did she do?” Hannah asked.

“She used your hospitalization to begin a legal file claiming you were unstable.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

“She planned guardianship two years ago?”

“Yes.”

Patricia’s voice trembled.

“She expected a grandchild eventually.”

The room went silent.

This was not a plan created tonight.

It was a plan waiting for the right night.

Claire asked, “Where is Bell now?”

The audio crackled.

Patricia whispered, “Inside the hospital.”

Owen turned sharply toward the hallway.

“Where?”

A door slammed somewhere nearby.

Patricia’s connection broke.

Then the overhead speaker clicked on throughout the fourth floor.

Arthur Bell’s voice filled the corridor.

“Nurse Donovan, return the Whitmore child to the nursery immediately.”

Claire stared at the ceiling speaker.

Bell continued.

“You are now suspended from duty.”
