Chapter 13 - The Mother's Choice.

The police moved toward the chapel first.
Claire stayed with Hannah and Nora.
Daniel insisted on going with Owen.
Hannah grabbed his sleeve before he left.
“Do not protect her again.”
Daniel looked at his wife.
“I won’t.”
She held his gaze.
“You have said that before.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Then watch what I do.”
He left.
Claire helped Hannah back into a wheelchair.
“You need medical care.”
“I need my daughter beside me.”
“You can have both.”
For the first time that night, Hannah almost smiled.
They returned to a secure recovery room guarded by two officers.
Emily stayed nearby.
Nora slept against Hannah’s chest.
The quiet should have felt peaceful.
Instead, every minute seemed to carry another secret.
Hannah looked at Claire.
“Why would Richard choose you?”
“I do not think he chose me in the way you mean.”
“He named you.”
“He may have wanted an example of an independent person.”
Hannah looked down at Nora.
“He did not trust his own family.”
Claire did not answer.
Some truths did not need help.
Twenty minutes later, Daniel returned.
His jacket was open and his face looked years older.
Hannah sat straighter.
“What happened?”
“Victor surrendered the folder.”
“And Eleanor?”
“With police.”
“Bell?”
“Also with police.”
Claire watched Daniel carefully.
“And Patricia?”
Daniel pulled out a chair.
“She was the one who called them there.”
Emily blinked.
“She set a trap?”
Daniel nodded.
Patricia had contacted Victor after moving Nora.
She told him Eleanor planned to blame him for everything.
Victor, already frightened by the fake badge, agreed to bring the original documents.
Patricia then lured Bell to the chapel by claiming she had destroyed the security backup.
Eleanor followed because she wanted the folder before police arrived.
“What was inside?” Hannah asked.
Daniel looked at her.
“The real guardianship paperwork.”
“Signed by you?”
“One page was.”
Hannah closed her eyes.
Daniel continued.
“But the most important page was not.”
He placed a document on the bed tray.
It was an emergency custody petition prepared before Nora’s birth.
The filing date field was blank.
The supporting statement claimed Hannah was unstable, isolated from family, and unable to make decisions.
At the bottom was a space for a physician’s declaration.
Arthur Bell had signed it.
Claire looked at the date.
Three days before Nora was born.
“This was planned before Hannah entered the hospital,” Claire said.
Daniel nodded.
Hannah looked at her husband.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
She studied him for a long moment.
Then she asked the hardest question.
“If your mother walks in here right now and tells you I am destroying the family, who do you believe?”
Daniel did not answer quickly.
He looked at Nora.
Then at Hannah.
“You.”
Hannah’s eyes filled with tears.
Daniel continued.
“And if you never trust me again, I will understand why.”
A police officer entered.
“Mrs. Whitmore, we need your decision.”
Hannah frowned.
“What decision?”
“Your mother-in-law is asking to see you before she gives a formal statement.”
Claire expected Hannah to refuse.
Instead, Hannah looked at Nora.

Then she said, “Bring her in.”
