Chapter 12 - The Trust Clause.

Claire thought she had misheard him.

“Read that again.”

Daniel turned the laptop toward her.

The document was a scanned amendment to the Whitmore family trust.

It had been signed seven years earlier by Daniel’s father, Richard Whitmore.

Clause 14B stated that if a first grandchild became the subject of a disputed guardianship, temporary voting authority would pass to an independent custodian until a court resolved the matter.

The custodian’s name was Claire Elise Donovan.

Claire stared at the page.

“I never agreed to this.”

Daniel looked equally confused.

“Did you know my father?”

“No.”

Then Claire remembered something.

Seven years earlier, before she became lead nurse, she had worked in cardiac intensive care.

Richard Whitmore had been one of her patients for nearly a month.

She remembered him as demanding at first and unexpectedly kind near the end.

He had once asked her a strange question.

“If a family has too much power, who should protect the child?”

Claire had assumed he was speaking philosophically.

She had answered without thinking.

“Someone who has nothing to gain.”

Daniel sat down slowly.

“He remembered you.”

Claire shook her head.

“That does not make me a legal custodian.”

Hannah pointed to the signature block.

“There is a second page.”

Daniel opened it.

Claire’s name appeared again beside an acknowledgment form.

But the signature beneath it was not hers.

Claire knew immediately.

“That is forged.”

Hannah looked at Daniel.

“Your father created the clause.”

“And someone tried to make it look accepted,” Daniel said.

Claire understood the deeper problem.

If the trust amendment became public, Eleanor could argue that the custodian clause was invalid because Claire never consented.

Yet why would Eleanor care if she believed guardianship alone gave her control?

Unless she had discovered the amendment tonight.

Emily pointed at the scan date.

“Look.”

The document had been uploaded to the hospital laptop at 10:52 p.m.

Less than an hour before the attempted transfer.

Owen returned with two police officers.

Arthur Bell was still missing inside the building.

Eleanor had been asked to remain in the lobby.

She had demanded an attorney.

Claire showed the officers the trust file, forged discharge order, altered bracelet, and security footage.

One officer asked the question everyone had avoided.

“Who benefits if the baby disappears from the mother’s custody before midnight?”

Daniel answered.

“My mother thought she did.”

Hannah looked at him.

“Thought?”

Daniel stared at Clause 14B.

“She did not know about this.”

Claire was not convinced.

“Then who did?”

A new message appeared on the laptop.

Patricia again.

SHE KNOWS NOW.

Another line followed.

THAT IS WHY BELL PANICKED.

Owen typed back.

WHERE ARE YOU?

Patricia did not answer.

Instead, a photo arrived.

It showed Eleanor standing in the old chapel on the first floor.

Arthur Bell was beside her.

Victor Shaw stood across from them.

Victor was alive, still inside the hospital, and holding the original black folder.

Daniel zoomed in.

A fourth person was barely visible in the chapel doorway.

Hannah leaned closer.

“That is Patricia.”

Claire studied the image.

Patricia was not hiding from Eleanor.

She was walking directly toward her.
