Chapter 7 - The Black Folder.

Daniel sat in a consultation room with both hands locked together.

For the first time that night, Eleanor was not beside him.

Owen had asked security to keep her in the lobby while Claire questioned Daniel with Hannah present.

Hannah held Nora against her chest.

She looked exhausted, but she refused to return to bed.

“What did you sign?” Claire asked.

Daniel stared at the floor.

“I thought they were corporate documents.”

Hannah gave a bitter laugh.

“Of course you did.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I am telling the truth.”

“You always tell the truth after your mother gets caught.”

Claire raised one hand.

“Stay with the documents.”

Daniel nodded.

“My father’s trust requires a temporary voting arrangement after the first grandchild is born.”

“We know that part,” Hannah said.

“My mother said the attorneys needed my signature before midnight.”

“Why midnight?” Claire asked.

“Because Nora’s birth automatically activated the trust.”

“What did the page say?”

“I did not read all of it.”

Hannah stared at him in disbelief.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I know how that sounds.”

“It sounds exactly like you.”

Claire kept her focus.

“Did you sign a guardianship form?”

“No.”

“Could you have?”

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation answered the question.

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“The black folder had several signature tabs.”

Hannah whispered, “You signed wherever she pointed.”

Daniel did not deny it.

Owen entered carrying a tablet.

“We found the man from the fake badge.”

Emily had identified him from security photographs taken earlier in the evening.

His name was Victor Shaw.

He was not hospital staff.

He was Eleanor Whitmore’s private attorney.

Daniel stood abruptly.

“Victor would never take Nora.”

Owen looked at him.

“He used a dead doctor’s badge.”

Daniel sat back down.

The room became quiet.

Claire asked Owen, “Where is he now?”

“Gone.”

“How?”

“Parking camera shows his car leaving at 11:42.”

“That was before Nora was found in the old corridor.”

“Exactly.”

Claire understood.

“Then Victor did not move the baby the second time.”

Owen nodded.

“Someone else used his badge.”

Daniel looked confused.

“Why would anyone do that?”

“To make him the obvious suspect,” Claire said.

Hannah’s eyes shifted toward the door.

“Or to protect the person who actually did it.”

Claire looked at her.

“You have someone in mind.”

Hannah hesitated.

Then she told them something she had not told anyone before.

Three weeks earlier, she had discovered payments from Whitmore Holdings to a shell company called North Vale Consulting.

The payments totaled nearly nine million dollars.

Victor Shaw’s name appeared on two authorization memos.

Eleanor’s name appeared on none.

“But Victor does nothing without Eleanor,” Daniel said.

“That’s what I thought,” Hannah replied.

“Then I found another signature.”

She looked directly at Daniel.

“Yours.”

Daniel stared at her.

“No.”

“I saw it.”

“I never authorized nine million dollars.”

Hannah’s expression softened for the first time.

“I know.”

Daniel looked more frightened by that than by the accusation.

Claire understood why.

If his signature had been forged on financial records, then the papers he signed tonight might not be the only documents being used against him.

Owen’s radio crackled again.

A security officer had found the black folder.

It was not in Eleanor’s suite.

It was inside Hannah’s hospital room.

And tucked into the front pocket was a signed statement declaring Hannah medically unfit to care for her newborn.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Daniel.
