Chapter 2 - The Door With No Handle.

The handle moved once.
Then it stopped.
Claire stood between the door and the bassinet while Emily pressed herself against the wall.
The room was almost dark except for a narrow strip of fluorescent light slipping beneath the door.
Baby Nora made a soft sound and shifted under the blanket.
Emily covered her mouth.
Claire could hear two people whispering in the hallway.
One voice belonged to Eleanor Whitmore.
The other belonged to Daniel.
“The baby leaves with family,” Eleanor said firmly.
“Mom, keep your voice down,” Daniel replied.
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
Through the small rectangular window in the door, Eleanor’s face appeared.
Her short blonde-gray hair was perfectly arranged.
Her expression was cold and patient.
She looked left.
Then right.
Then directly into the dark room.
Claire stepped backward, keeping herself beyond the thin line of sight.
Daniel appeared beside his mother.
He looked pale.
“Maybe she’s still in the nursery,” he whispered.
“She is not.”
“How do you know?”
Eleanor did not answer.
That silence told Claire more than words could have.
Someone in Eleanor’s circle had access to the hospital tracking system.
Emily leaned close to Claire.
“The man in the suit had a badge,” she whispered.
“What kind?”
“Hospital vendor badge.”
“Name?”
“I only saw the first letter.”
Claire nodded.
“Try to remember.”
The doorknob moved again.
This time, Eleanor spoke louder.
“Nurse Donovan?”
Claire did not answer.
“I know you are concerned,” Eleanor continued.
“You are making this more complicated than it needs to be.”
Emily’s tears rolled silently down her cheeks.
Claire kept her voice low enough that only Emily could hear.
“Do not make a sound.”
Eleanor waited.
Then her footsteps moved away.
Daniel remained for several seconds.
Claire saw his shadow under the door.
For a moment, she thought he might knock.
Instead, he whispered something so softly she nearly missed it.
“I’m sorry.”
Then he left too.
Emily stared at Claire.
“He knows.”
“Maybe.”
“He apologized.”
“People apologize for many reasons.”
Claire pulled out her phone.
No signal.
She checked again.
The room should have had full hospital Wi-Fi and cellular reception.
Instead, both were gone.
“That’s not possible,” Emily said.
Claire walked toward the cabinet where an old wall phone hung.
The line was dead.
Her uneasiness deepened.
Someone had not merely forged a discharge form.
Someone had planned for resistance.
Nora began to fuss.
Claire lifted the baby carefully from the bassinet.
The child’s hospital bracelet caught the dim light.
Claire froze.
The bracelet was not the one she had checked twenty minutes earlier.
The identification number was different by one digit.
Emily saw Claire’s expression.
“What?”
Claire turned the tiny bracelet toward her.
“This is wrong.”
Emily blinked.
“Wrong how?”
“This bracelet belongs to another newborn.”
Emily stepped closer.
“But there’s only one other baby on this wing tonight.”
Claire knew that.
A baby boy had been delivered three hours earlier on the floor below.
His family name was Alvarez.
His bracelet number ended in eight.
Nora’s original bracelet ended in three.
The band around Nora’s ankle ended in eight.
Claire’s pulse quickened.
Someone had switched the bands.
If Nora had reached the service elevator under the wrong identity, the electronic security system would have logged the wrong child leaving the maternity floor.
And if anyone later reviewed the records, it might appear that Nora had never moved at all.
Emily whispered, “Why would anyone do that?”
Claire looked toward the door.
“To make a baby disappear on paper.”
A soft click came from above them.
The emergency light went out.
The room fell completely dark.
Then Emily’s phone screen lit by itself.
A message had appeared from an unknown number.
It contained only six words.
