Chapter 4 - The Missing Signature.

Claire left Nora with Emily and Owen long enough to reach Hannah’s room.
The bed was empty.
The monitor leads had been disconnected neatly.
The IV pole stood beside the bed.
A blanket lay folded on the chair.
There was no sign of a struggle.
That frightened Claire more than disorder would have.
A patient recovering from surgery could not simply walk away unnoticed.
The night supervisor, Patricia Lane, hurried toward her.
“What is happening on my floor?” Patricia demanded.
Claire handed her the forged discharge form.
Patricia read it twice.
“This cannot be real.”
“It isn’t.”
Patricia looked toward the empty room.
“Hannah was transferred.”
“By whom?”
“A transport order appeared in the system.”
“To where?”
“Imaging.”
Claire shook her head.
“She has no imaging order.”
Patricia’s face tightened.
The two women checked the electronic record.
The transfer order had been entered at 11:31 p.m.
The authorizing physician field was blank.
The destination field had already been deleted.
Someone was changing the record almost as fast as they could read it.
Claire pointed at the screen.
“Print everything.”
Patricia tried.
The printer displayed ACCESS DENIED.
Claire felt a cold anger settle over her fear.
This was no longer a family argument.
Someone was manipulating hospital systems to move a mother and child separately.
A nurse from the lower floor approached them.
“Are you looking for Mrs. Whitmore?”
Claire turned.
“Yes.”
“I saw a patient in a wheelchair near the old radiology hall.”
“When?”
“Maybe five minutes ago.”
“Who was with her?”
“A man in a dark suit.”
Claire and Patricia exchanged a look.
The same man Emily had seen.
Claire ran toward the old radiology wing.
The corridor there was dim because half the rooms were closed for renovation.
At the end, a wheelchair stood abandoned near a locked supply door.
A hospital blanket lay across the seat.
Claire touched it.
Still warm.
“Hannah?” she called softly.
No answer.
Then she heard a faint tapping from the supply room.
Claire tried the handle.
Locked.
She called Owen.
He arrived less than a minute later with a master key.
Inside, Hannah Whitmore sat on the floor against a cabinet.
She was pale, exhausted, and furious.
“They took my phone,” she said.
Claire knelt beside her.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
Hannah gripped Claire’s sleeve.
“Where is Nora?”
“She’s safe.”
Hannah closed her eyes for one second.
Then she whispered, “Do not let Eleanor take her.”
Claire stared at her.
“You knew this could happen?”
Hannah’s eyes filled with tears, but her voice remained steady.
“I knew she would try something.”
“Why?”
Hannah looked toward Owen.
“Because Nora is worth more to Eleanor than Daniel is.”
Owen frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Hannah took a slow breath.
“My father-in-law created a trust before he died.”
Claire waited.
“The first Whitmore grandchild receives the controlling shares of the family company.”
“Shares?”
“Held by the child’s legal guardian until adulthood.”
Claire understood immediately.
“If Eleanor controls Nora…”
“She controls the company.”
Owen’s jaw tightened.
“And if you control Nora?”
“I can force an independent audit.”
Claire saw the rest in Hannah’s face.
“You were going to investigate her.”
“I already did.”
Hannah reached beneath the sleeve of her hospital gown and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“I signed a directive before delivery.”
Claire opened it.
It named Hannah’s sister as temporary guardian if Hannah became incapacitated.
It specifically excluded Eleanor Whitmore.
Claire looked at the signature line.
Then she saw the problem.
The witness signature was missing.
Hannah’s face fell.
“It was there.”
Claire looked toward the corridor.
Someone had not only moved Hannah.
Someone had altered the one document that could stop Eleanor.
Then Owen’s radio crackled.
A security officer spoke urgently.
“The Whitmore family is at the main exit.”
A pause followed.
