Chapter 9 - The First Pregnancy.

Hannah stopped breathing for a moment when Claire showed her the note.

Daniel saw it.

His eyes widened.

“What first pregnancy?”

Hannah looked at him.

Silence filled the security room.

Claire regretted the question immediately, but the note had made it unavoidable.

Hannah lowered her eyes to Nora.

“Two years ago,” she said.

Daniel stepped backward.

“You told me the test was wrong.”

“It wasn’t.”

His face crumpled.

“You were pregnant?”

“For seven weeks.”

“Why did you lie to me?”

Hannah’s voice stayed controlled.

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“Of your mother.”

Daniel stared at Eleanor’s name on the note.

Hannah continued.

She had found out about the pregnancy during a period when Whitmore Holdings was fighting over control of a major division.

Eleanor had become strangely interested in Hannah’s medical appointments.

She asked what doctor she used.

She offered private specialists.

She insisted the family needed to know everything.

Then Hannah experienced a medical emergency and lost the pregnancy.

The doctors called it a tragic complication.

Hannah had accepted that explanation.

At first.

Months later, she discovered Eleanor had requested copies of her medical records without permission through a foundation contact.

Daniel looked sick.

“Are you saying my mother caused it?”

“No,” Hannah said quickly.

“I have never had proof of that.”

Claire appreciated the distinction.

Fear could create terrible suspicions, but suspicion was not evidence.

Hannah looked at the note again.

“Patricia was working that night too.”

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

“You knew her then?”

“No.”

“But maybe she remembers something.”

Owen searched the staffing archive.

Patricia Lane had indeed been the supervising nurse during Hannah’s earlier hospitalization.

That could explain why she took Nora away from Eleanor’s reach.

But it did not explain why she vanished.

Daniel sat down heavily.

“I should have known.”

Hannah looked at him.

“You should have listened.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

No defense.

No excuse.

Just yes.

Claire’s phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

DON’T TRUST THE BOARDROOM.

Then another message arrived.

CHECK ROOM 417.

Owen frowned.

“Room 417 is closed.”

“Why?” Claire asked.

“Water damage.”

Claire knew that was not true.

She had walked past 417 earlier that week.

The room had been clean and ready.

They went there immediately.

The door was locked, but Owen opened it with a mechanical key.

Inside, the lights were off.

A laptop sat on a small table.

Beside it were printed copies of Hannah’s medical records, Nora’s birth certificate worksheet, and several trust documents.

On the wall was a handwritten timeline of the night.

11:20 - PATEL LEAVES.

11:26 - DISCHARGE SIGNATURE ENTERED.

11:31 - HANNAH MOVED.

11:36 - NORA HIDDEN.

11:41 - CAMERA LOOP.

Daniel stared at the final line.

11:55 - FAMILY EXIT.

“It was planned to the minute,” he whispered.

Claire opened the laptop.

A video file was already playing.

The footage showed Eleanor in the private maternity suite earlier that evening.

She was speaking to someone off camera.

Her voice was unmistakable.

“At midnight, I want the mother awake and the baby gone.”

Daniel went completely still.

Then another voice answered from behind the camera.

May you like

It belonged to Patricia Lane.
