Chapter 6 - The Ambulance That Wasn't There.

For two seconds, no one in the lobby moved.
Then Owen reached for his radio.
“All exits locked,” he ordered.
“Check ambulance bay, loading dock, and garage.”
A voice answered immediately.
“Ambulance bay is clear.”
Emily stared at him.
“That’s impossible.”
“The man told me an ambulance was waiting.”
Claire looked at her.
“Exactly what did he say?”
Emily swallowed.
“He said the family had arranged private transport.”
“Did he show you paperwork?”
“Yes.”
“Did you read it?”
Emily’s face tightened with shame.
“No.”
Claire touched her arm.
“This is not the time to blame yourself.”
Eleanor gave a dry laugh.
“How convenient.”
Hannah turned toward her.
“What is convenient?”
“That every mistake tonight seems to belong to someone else.”
Daniel stepped between them.
“Enough.”
Eleanor looked surprised.
Daniel rarely raised his voice to her.
He turned to Claire.
“Find my daughter.”
Claire answered without hesitation.
“That is what I am doing.”
Owen received another radio message.
“No private ambulance checked in tonight.”
Claire looked toward the hallway map mounted beside the elevators.
There were only three routes from the consultation room to an exterior exit.
Two were covered by active cameras.
The third passed through an old surgical corridor under renovation.
Claire pointed.
“There.”
Owen nodded.
They moved fast.
Hannah stayed in the lobby with a nurse and Daniel.
Eleanor refused to leave.
The old surgical corridor was colder than the rest of the hospital.
Half the ceiling lights were off.
Plastic construction sheets hung across two doorways.
Claire heard the squeak of wheels ahead.
She ran toward the sound.
At the end of the hall, a clear bassinet stood beside an empty linen cart.
Nora was inside.
Claire reached her and checked the baby immediately.
Nora was awake, calm, and unharmed.
Emily began crying again, this time from relief.
Claire checked the security sensor.
Still attached.
Owen searched the nearby rooms.
No one was there.
On the floor beside the bassinet lay a disposable surgical mask and a laminated identification badge.
Owen picked it up with a gloved hand.
The badge belonged to Dr. Nathan Cole.
Claire knew the name.
Cole had retired from St. Catherine three years earlier.
He had also died eight months ago.
Emily stared at the badge.
“That’s the man’s picture.”
Claire looked closer.
The photograph had been replaced.
A different face had been printed over the original card.
“Can you identify him?” Owen asked.
Emily nodded slowly.
“I think so.”
They returned to the lobby with Nora.
Hannah broke down when the bassinet appeared.
Claire brought Nora to her and watched mother and daughter touch foreheads for the first time that night.
Even Daniel turned away to hide his tears.
Eleanor remained still.
Claire noticed that too.
Then Owen laid the fake badge on the lobby desk.
Emily looked at it again.
Her expression changed.
“I know him.”
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who?”
Emily lifted a trembling finger.
“He was at the dinner upstairs.”
Everyone turned toward Eleanor.
Emily continued.
“He stood behind Mrs. Whitmore’s chair.”
Eleanor’s face finally lost its calm.
“That is not true.”
Emily flinched.
Claire moved beside her.
“Let her finish.”
Emily took a breath.
“He carried a black folder.”
Daniel went pale.
Claire saw it immediately.
“You recognize that folder?”
Daniel looked at his mother.
May you like
Then he whispered, “I signed papers from it tonight.”
