Chapter 5 - The Quiet Alarm.

Claire’s heart seemed to stop.
Nora was supposed to be in the consultation room with Emily.
Owen called Emily immediately.
No answer.
He called again.
Still nothing.
Hannah tried to stand.
Claire stopped her.
“You cannot run through the hospital right now.”
“That is my daughter.”
“I know.”
“Then do not tell me to stay here.”
Claire looked at Owen.
“Get a wheelchair.”
They moved toward the main lobby as quickly as Hannah’s condition allowed.
The hospital had gone strangely quiet.
The normal midnight sounds were still there, but underneath them was a tension everyone could feel.
Elevator doors opened and closed.
Staff whispered near nursing stations.
Security officers stood at intersections without knowing whom they were supposed to stop.
Claire hated that most.
Confusion was protecting the wrong people.
They reached the lobby balcony overlooking the front entrance.
Below them, Eleanor stood beside a clear bassinet.
Daniel was next to her.
Two security officers blocked the automatic doors.
Claire could not see the baby’s face from above.
Hannah made a broken sound.
“Nora.”
Claire held her shoulder.
“Wait.”
Something was wrong.
The blanket inside the bassinet was blue.
Nora’s blanket was pale cream.
Claire looked at Owen.
“That is not Nora.”
He stared down.
“Then whose baby is it?”
The answer came when a frightened father rushed into the lobby from the elevator.
“My son!” he shouted.
The bassinet held Mateo Alvarez.
The wrong bracelet finally made sense.
Someone had switched the newborn identification so the security system would accept the wrong bassinet as Nora’s.
But whoever planned the escape had taken the wrong child in the confusion.
Eleanor looked furious.
Daniel looked horrified.
The Alvarez father reached the bassinet, and one security officer immediately returned the child to him.
Eleanor stepped backward.
“This is outrageous,” she said.
Claire rode the elevator down with Owen and Hannah.
When the doors opened, Eleanor turned toward them.
Her face changed only slightly when she saw Hannah awake.
That slight change was enough.
“You were supposed to be resting,” Eleanor said.
Hannah stared at her.
“And my daughter was supposed to be with me.”
Eleanor lifted her chin.
“No one is taking your daughter.”
Claire held up the forged discharge order.
“Then explain this.”
Daniel looked at the paper.
“What is that?”
Eleanor did not look at him.
“A misunderstanding.”
“Mom.”
“Not now, Daniel.”
Hannah’s voice sharpened.
“No, now.”
For the first time, Daniel moved away from his mother.
Claire noticed it.
So did Eleanor.
Then a service elevator opened behind them.
Emily stepped out.
She was crying.
Her white nurse cap was missing.
But Nora’s bassinet was not with her.
Claire rushed forward.
“Where is the baby?”
Emily could barely speak.
“A doctor came to the room.”
“What doctor?”
“He knew the security code.”
Owen’s face darkened.
“Name.”
Emily shook her head.
“He wore a mask.”
Claire felt the lobby tilt around her.
“Where did he take Nora?”
Emily looked toward Eleanor.
Then she whispered the words that changed everything.

“He said Mrs. Whitmore already paid for the ambulance.”
