Chapter 8 - The Camera That Went Dark.

Daniel read the statement three times.

Each time, his face became paler.

“That is my signature,” he said.

Hannah looked away.

“But I never read these words.”

Claire examined the document.

The signature page was separate from the medical declaration.

The staple holes did not line up.

Someone had taken a page Daniel actually signed and attached it to something else.

Owen pointed to the corner.

“The paper stock is different too.”

Daniel looked at Hannah.

“I did not call you unfit.”

She answered quietly.

“You let your mother put papers in front of you and signed them without asking why.”

“I know.”

“That is how she does it.”

Claire saw shame settle into his face.

For the first time, Daniel was not defending himself.

He was beginning to understand how much of his life had been managed for him.

Owen received a call from the security control room.

“We have video from the old corridor,” he said.

They went upstairs together.

The camera feed showed the consultation room door at 11:36 p.m.

Emily entered first.

Claire followed with Nora’s bassinet.

At 11:39, Eleanor and Daniel appeared outside the door.

At 11:41, they walked away.

Then the image froze.

The time code continued moving.

The picture did not.

At 11:47, the image resumed.

The consultation room door was open.

The bassinet was gone.

Six minutes had vanished.

Owen cursed under his breath.

“Can you recover it?” Claire asked.

“Maybe from the server cache.”

The technician began working.

Daniel stood behind them.

“My mother cannot do this herself.”

Claire looked at him.

“No one said she did.”

“She has people everywhere.”

Hannah gave him a hard look.

“You say that like you just noticed.”

Before Daniel could answer, the technician raised a hand.

“I found a secondary stream.”

A backup camera across the hall had captured a reflection in a framed glass poster.

The image was distorted, but enough remained to show someone entering the consultation room during the missing six minutes.

The person wore blue medical scrubs.

Emily leaned toward the screen.

“That is not the man with the mask.”

Claire’s pulse quickened.

The figure was smaller.

Female.

The woman pushed Nora’s bassinet away.

Then she returned alone less than a minute later.

Claire watched again.

Something about the walk seemed familiar.

A slight limp in the left leg.

Patricia Lane, the night supervisor, had injured her knee the previous winter.

Claire turned toward Owen.

He had noticed it too.

“Where is Patricia?”

No one knew.

They searched the nursing station.

Her bag was gone.

Her coat was gone.

Her access card lay on the desk.

Inside the top drawer, Claire found an envelope.

Her name was written on the front.

CLAIRE DONOVAN.

She opened it carefully.

Inside was a single handwritten note.

I DID NOT TAKE THE BABY FOR ELEANOR.

Claire read the next line.

I TOOK HER TO KEEP HER ALIVE.

Emily whispered, “What does that mean?”

Claire turned the page over.

There was one final sentence.
