Chapter 10 - The Open Door.

Mara's promise to Lily repeated in her mind as the video showed the black car leaving the Halcyon.
No more loud rooms.
She had promised safety and delivered another crisis.
Adrian grabbed a chair and struck the terminal door's release bar, but the electronic lock held.
Evelyn called emergency services while Daniel searched the vehicle records outside.
Mara contacted Owen through the satellite phone.
He sounded furious with himself.
Mason had triggered a false gas alert near the child-care suite.
During the evacuation, he appeared in an official engineering jacket and claimed the east corridor was unsafe.
Celeste had followed Owen toward the alarm panel while Mason guided Lily toward the lobby.
"She trusted the uniform," Owen said.
Mara forced herself to focus on facts instead of blame.
The hotel's cameras tracked the car for three blocks before it entered a parking structure.
Daniel identified the vehicle as a Valecrest sedan assigned to Grant's executive office.
Its navigation system still reported to the corporate fleet network.
Mara authorized live tracking.
The signal showed the car moving north along the river.
"Mason will not hurt her," Grant said suddenly through the conference call from hotel security.
Mara had forgotten he was still connected to Evelyn's line.
"Then tell him to stop."
"He is following Harlan now, not me."
"You recruited him."
Grant's silence admitted the truth.
He explained that Mason believed Northstar would make him regional director.
The car was probably heading toward the Harbor Crown, where Harlan kept a temporary office during acquisition planning.
Adrian found a manual chain beside the terminal ticket window and pulled until the lock released.
They rushed outside.
Daniel drove while Mara followed the fleet signal on her phone.
Rain thickened across the windshield, turning streetlights into blurred gold ribbons.
Evelyn contacted the Harbor Crown and ordered the property secured.
The acting manager did not respond.
Grant had replaced three senior managers there during the previous month.
Each replacement had ties to Northstar Meridian.
"This was never one bad decision," Mara said.
"It was an occupation," Daniel replied.
The black car entered the Harbor Crown underground garage at six twelve.
Mara's vehicle arrived four minutes later alongside local officers.
The garage gate refused their company credentials.
Mara used the satellite phone's founder override, and the steel barrier rose.
Inside, the garage was empty except for the sedan and a trail of small wet footprints leading toward the service elevator.
Mara recognized Lily's white shoes beside the car.
One had fallen off.
She picked it up and held it against her palm.
Adrian placed a hand on her shoulder.
"We will bring her home."
They followed the officers upstairs.
The Harbor Crown lobby was dark despite the early hour.
Furniture had been covered for a renovation that Mara had never approved.
Only the reception desk remained illuminated.
Mason stood behind it with Lily seated safely in a leather chair.
He raised both hands when he saw the officers.
"I didn't know this was about a child," he said.
Mara crossed the lobby and lifted Lily into her arms.
The child clung to her without speaking.
Mason claimed Harlan had ordered him to bring Lily there as protection against Grant's failure.
He said he had changed his mind after Lily asked why her father kept sending people to take her places.
"Where is Harlan?" Evelyn asked.
Mason pointed toward the ballroom.
They entered cautiously, but the room was empty.
At its center stood a projector and a single white envelope.
The envelope contained copies of documents bearing Mara's signature.
They appeared to authorize every questionable transfer Grant had approved.
The signatures looked perfect.
Mara knew she had never seen the documents.
The projector activated automatically.
Harlan appeared against a white background.
"The original ledger may embarrass Grant," he said, "but these authorizations destroy your claim of innocence."
Evelyn examined the paper and found authentic notary seals.
Someone with access to Mara's private signing system had created legally convincing records.
Only three people held that access.
Mara, Evelyn, and Daniel.
Mara looked at the two people beside her.
May you like
Daniel's face had gone completely still.
