Chapter 12 - The Boardroom Trap.
Grant's restored confidence was almost convincing until Mara noticed the security officer standing behind him.
He had not been released.
The board chair, Thomas Bell, had joined him inside the monitored office to conduct an emergency interview.
Grant was using the camera angle to create an illusion of freedom.
"Show me the resolution," Mara said.
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
"No final resolution has been adopted."
Grant's smile tightened.
"A majority supports temporary shared control."
"That is not restored authority," Evelyn said.
"It will be in forty minutes."
Grant claimed the false authorizations proved Mara had participated in the transfers and could not act as sole trustee during investigation.
Thomas explained that four board members had already requested independent leadership.
Mara asked whether those directors had received calls from Northstar Meridian.
Thomas admitted that Northstar had offered emergency financing that afternoon.
The trap was now visible.
Harlan created doubt, then offered the solution to the doubt he created.
"Move the meeting to the Harbor Crown ballroom," Mara said.
Thomas objected because directors were scattered across three cities.
"Use a secure video conference, and let every director see the evidence at the same time."
Grant leaned toward the camera.
"You want to stage another performance."
"You chose the stage when you threw money at my feet."
The call ended.
Hotel staff removed the ballroom covers and restored the lights while Daniel prepared a clean network.
Mara changed Lily into dry clothes from the hotel gift shop and arranged a quiet room beside the ballroom with Adrian and two trusted attendants.
Lily did not want her mother to leave.
Mara sat beside her until the child's breathing slowed.
"Are the loud rooms finished?" Lily asked.
"This is the last one," Mara promised.
At eight o'clock, the board appeared across a wall of screens.
Thomas joined remotely from the Halcyon with Grant seated beside him under supervision.
Harlan attended through counsel and denied any improper conduct.
Mara began with the original trust documents, the defective eight-line seals, and the equipment recovered behind the projection booth.
Evelyn presented the copied email credentials and the technology firm's relationship with Northstar.
Daniel traced the eleven million dollars through the consulting companies and back to the false secured debt.
Adrian voluntarily disclosed his signed statement and the pressure Grant had used to obtain it.
Celeste joined from the Halcyon conference room.
She described the second phone, the backup code, and the apartment funded through Valecrest accounts.
Grant attacked her credibility.
"She accepted every gift and now pretends to be innocent."
Celeste did not flinch.
"I accepted gifts because you told me they were yours to give."
The board members exchanged uneasy looks.
Grant changed tactics and accused Mara of arranging the entire crisis to remove him from leadership.
He displayed private messages in which Mara had expressed doubts about his judgment.
Mara confirmed the messages were real.
"Concern about misconduct is not proof that I invented it," she said.
Thomas asked about the forged authorizations.
Evelyn showed the recovered draft bearing Harlan's notes.
Harlan's counsel called the file fabricated.
Then Mason entered the ballroom with officers and identified the projection office as the place where Grant had tested the false seal.
Grant denied ever entering that room.
Daniel produced hotel access records showing Grant's executive key entering it seventeen times.
Grant claimed the records had been altered after Mara froze his authority.
Every answer produced another question, exactly as Harlan intended.
The board moved toward a vote on temporary shared control.
Mara requested five final minutes.
She placed the gold-crested satellite phone on the podium.
"Grant said I built this crisis," she said.
"So let us examine the moment before I knew it existed."
Owen transmitted lobby security footage from that afternoon.
The board watched Grant drop money at Mara's feet and describe the company cards as his property.
They watched his shock when she revealed the founder device.
They heard his uncontrolled whisper after seeing Harlan's photograph.
"He wasn't supposed to be there."
Grant's own words connected him to the meeting before Mara had accused him of anything.
Thomas postponed the shared-control vote.
Harlan's counsel immediately disconnected.
Mara expected the meeting to turn in her favor.
Instead, Daniel received an emergency message from Singapore.
One lender had accepted a duplicate packet through a channel nobody had identified.
The Harbor Crown loan was now officially in default.
Northstar Meridian had filed to take possession at nine o'clock.
