Chapter 9 - The Heir at the Terminal.

Evelyn arrived on the rooftop as security escorted Grant toward the service elevator.

Mara refused to let him leave until he explained his final statement.

Grant claimed Adrian possessed a dormant succession right created before Mara's father amended the trust.

If Adrian signed a replacement instrument while claiming Mara was incapable of leadership, Harlan could challenge every action she had taken that day.

Evelyn said the theory was weak but not impossible.

The older trust documents had been drafted during a period when Mara was still in college.

Adrian had briefly been named successor trustee.

"Harlan does not need to win," Mara said. "He needs delay and doubt."

Evelyn nodded.

Grant had repeated Harlan's strategy so often that Mara could now see it before he described it.

Daniel contacted local officials and sent them the ferry terminal address.

Mara wanted to go herself.

Evelyn objected because Lily had already endured too much uncertainty.

Celeste offered to remain at the hotel with Owen and the child.

Mara looked at her in disbelief.

"You expect me to trust you?"

"No," Celeste answered. "I expect you to trust Owen while I explain every account Grant put in my name."

It was the first honest answer Celeste had given her.

Mara placed Lily in Owen's care and knelt until their eyes were level.

"Mommy has to help Uncle Adrian, and then I am coming back."

Lily clutched the gold crest on Mara's satellite phone.

"No more loud rooms," she said.

Mara promised.

She left with Evelyn and Daniel in a hotel security vehicle as evening traffic crowded the waterfront streets.

Rain began falling in thin silver lines.

At the terminal, an abandoned passenger hall faced the darkening harbor.

Officials had found Adrian's rental car but no sign of Adrian or Harlan.

Mara noticed a light moving inside the old ticket office.

She entered with Evelyn while Daniel remained outside coordinating the search.

Adrian sat alone at a wooden counter with a document before him.

His face showed exhaustion, but he was not restrained.

"Where is Harlan?" Mara asked.

Adrian looked toward the empty waiting room.

"He was never here."

The meeting instructions had arrived through Grant's private network, but the person who met Adrian wore a cap and never revealed his face.

He had delivered the succession document and left Adrian to decide.

"I haven't signed it," Adrian said.

Mara saw his pen resting beside the signature line.

"But you considered it."

Adrian looked ashamed.

"If I sign, they promised to leave the foundation alone."

"They cannot make that promise."

"The foundation serves hundreds of families, Mara."

"And Valecrest employs thousands."

Adrian stood and paced between the old ticket windows.

He accused Mara of inheriting their father's certainty while he inherited only restrictions and apologies.

Mara allowed him to speak.

Some of his resentment was unfair, but some had grown from years of decisions made around him instead of with him.

"I should have asked what Grant was doing for you," she said.

Adrian stopped.

"I should have told you before his help became a chain."

Their honesty did not erase the damage, but it changed the room.

Evelyn examined the succession paper and found a hidden clause transferring Adrian's beneficial interest to Northstar if the challenge failed.

Harlan had never intended to protect him.

Adrian tore the unsigned document in half.

At that moment, the terminal's public-address system came alive.

Harlan's voice echoed through the empty hall.

"A touching reunion," he said.

Mara looked toward the ceiling cameras.

Harlan had been watching remotely.

"You lost the trust challenge," she said.

"I expected to."

The terminal doors locked automatically.

Outside, Daniel shouted that the security vehicle had started moving by itself.

Mara's satellite phone displayed an incoming video.

The image showed the Halcyon Grand lobby.

Celeste stood beside Owen, but Lily was no longer with them.

The camera shifted toward the revolving doors.

Mason Trent carried Lily toward a waiting black car.

Harlan spoke softly through the terminal speakers.
