Chapter 6 - The Brother's Signature.

Mara read Adrian's signature three times before she accepted that it was not an imitation.
Her brother's handwriting had always leaned sharply to the right, as if even his name was eager to leave the page.
Grant watched her reaction with the first hint of confidence he had shown since the accounts were frozen.
"Your own family knew you were unfit to lead," he said.
Evelyn moved the statement away from him.
"A signature does not prove the claims are true."
"It proves Mara's control will be challenged."
Mara called Adrian using the satellite phone.
The call went directly to voicemail.
She tried his home, his office, and the number of the rehabilitation foundation he managed in Denver.
Nobody answered.
Daniel searched the company travel system and found that Adrian had entered the Halcyon Grand that morning.
His room was on the twenty-third floor.
Owen checked the registry.
The suite had been booked through Northstar Meridian.
"Send someone to the room," Mara said.
Owen contacted security while Grant began pacing beside the glass wall.
"Adrian came to me because he was worried about you," he said.
"What did you offer him?"
"A chance to correct your father's mistake."
Mara remembered the years after their father died, when Adrian's grief had become recklessness.
He had resented the trust restrictions that prevented him from selling his shares.
Grant had acted like a patient older brother, paying bills and arranging quiet solutions.
Mara had been grateful.
Now she wondered how many of those solutions had created obligations Grant could later collect.
"Did you pay his debts?" she asked.
Grant stopped pacing.
"I helped your family."
"With company funds?"
"With resources available to me."
Daniel searched the consulting transfers and found payments to a Colorado advisory firm registered beside Adrian's foundation.
The total was nine hundred thousand dollars.
Celeste stared at Grant in disbelief.
"You told me that money financed our hotel concept."
Grant ignored her.
Mara's phone rang before she could press him further.
It was the security officer outside Adrian's suite.
The room was empty, but the television displayed a paused recording addressed to Mara.
Owen brought the feed onto the conference room screen.
Adrian appeared seated against a plain wall, exhausted and ashamed.
"Mara, if you're watching this, Grant probably used my statement," he began.
Grant moved toward the screen.
"Turn it off."
Owen did not move.
Adrian explained that Grant had covered old debts and then threatened to expose the foundation's financial disorder unless Adrian signed.
He admitted the foundation had borrowed restricted donations but insisted the money had been replaced.
"I signed because I thought the statement would stay in a drawer," Adrian said.
Mara closed her eyes for one second.
The excuse hurt almost as much as the signature.
Adrian continued.
"Then I learned Grant planned to force the trust into a sale."
He had copied documents from Grant's office and arranged to deliver them to Mara.
Before he could do so, someone followed him from the airport.
He had left the hotel through the service corridor and hidden the documents in a place only Mara would recognize.
"Dad called it the room that never sleeps," Adrian said.
The video ended.
Mara immediately remembered the old clock room beneath the Halcyon ballroom.
Her father had collected mechanical clocks from every hotel he restored.
Their ticking continued through power failures, renovations, and storms.
Grant also understood.
He ran for the conference room door.
Owen blocked him.
"Move," Grant demanded.
"You are no longer authorized below the lobby level."
Grant turned toward Mara.
"If Adrian took confidential records, he exposed the entire company."
"Then you should hope I find them first."
Mara asked Evelyn to stay with Lily and ordered Daniel to accompany her downstairs.
Celeste surprised everyone by asking to come.
"Grant used my name on those consulting firms," she said.
"I need to know what else he attached to me."
Mara considered refusing, but Celeste might recognize details hidden in the documents.
They crossed the lobby toward the service elevator while Grant argued with Evelyn behind them.
The scattered bills still lay on the marble floor.
Mara stepped over them again.
In the service elevator, Daniel selected the basement.
The doors closed, and the elegant chandelier light narrowed to a golden line.
Halfway down, the elevator stopped.
The emergency light turned red.
Celeste gripped the rail.
"Grant knows the building systems," she whispered.
Mara looked at the floor indicator, which had gone completely dark.
Then a speaker above them clicked on.
Grant's voice filled the stalled elevator.
