Chapter 7 - The Room That Never Sleeps.

Mara stood beneath the red emergency light and listened to Grant breathe through the speaker.
His threat was carefully worded, but fear made it clumsy.
"Where is my brother?" she asked.
"Safe, if you stop this performance."
Daniel examined the elevator controls and found that the service override had been activated from Grant's former office.
Owen should have deactivated that access.
Someone else inside the hotel was helping him.
"You no longer control the accounts," Mara said.
"I control information, and information survives longer than money."
The speaker went silent.
Daniel opened the lower control panel and switched the elevator onto manual emergency power.
The car descended slowly and stopped several inches below the basement floor.
Mara stepped out first, lifting her dress slightly to clear the uneven threshold.
Celeste followed without complaint, leaving one emerald heel behind when it caught in the gap.
The basement corridor smelled of polished wood, old paper, and machinery.
Hundreds of clocks ticked beyond a pair of brass doors.
Mara entered the room and felt eight years old again.
Her father had once brought her there during a thunderstorm and explained that reliable systems required more than one source of power.
"Never let one person hold every key," he had told her.
She had remembered the lesson in business and forgotten it in marriage.
Daniel began searching the cabinets.
Celeste studied the clocks and noticed that one mantel clock showed the wrong time.
Every other clock read four thirty-six.
The small brass clock read eleven eleven.
"Grant always sets display watches to eleven eleven in photographs," Celeste said.
Mara opened the clock's rear panel.
Inside was a hotel key and a folded card bearing Adrian's handwriting.
The card directed them to locker 1111 in the staff archive.
Before they could leave, the brass doors locked behind them.
The overhead lights went out.
The clocks continued ticking in perfect disorder.
Celeste used her phone flashlight while Daniel contacted Owen through the emergency network.
Owen confirmed that the building engineer, Mason Trent, had disappeared from his station.
Mason had been personally promoted by Grant two months earlier.
Mara understood that Grant had prepared support inside the hotel long before that afternoon.
Daniel located a mechanical release behind a grandfather clock and opened the doors.
They reached the archive corridor and found locker 1111 already unlocked.
Inside sat a blue document box and a digital recorder.
Mara pressed play.
Adrian's voice described a meeting between Grant, Harlan, and Mason in the Halcyon boiler office.
Grant had promised Mason a senior position after Northstar acquired the property.
Mason would create maintenance failures that made the hotel appear neglected during inspection.
Nobody planned to endanger guests, but the staged failures would justify emergency closure and destroy market confidence.
Daniel opened the blue box.
It contained vendor contracts, private lender instructions, and a ledger connecting the missing millions to Grant's network.
The evidence was strong enough to protect the company and expose the scheme.
It did not reveal Adrian's location.
At the bottom of the box, Mara found a handwritten apology.
Adrian wrote that he was going to meet Harlan at the old Harbor Crown ferry terminal and trade the original ledger for his freedom.
The meeting was scheduled for five o'clock.
It was already four forty-eight.
"We need to call the authorities," Daniel said.
Mara agreed and handed him the recorder.
Celeste examined one of the contracts and pointed to a witness signature.
The signature belonged to Vanessa Cole, Grant's executive assistant.
Vanessa had arranged the lunch meeting that brought Mara to the lobby.
"She knew exactly where all of us would be," Celeste said.
Mara called Owen and asked him to locate Vanessa.
Owen reported that Vanessa had just entered the private elevator carrying Lily.
Mara stopped breathing for a heartbeat.
"Evelyn would never release her."
"Evelyn was called to the front desk for an urgent legal delivery," Owen said.
The delivery had been false.
Security footage showed Vanessa approaching the sleeping child and telling the temporary attendant that Mara had requested the transfer.
The elevator was rising toward the rooftop lounge.
Mara ran for the stairs.
Daniel followed while contacting hotel security.
Celeste removed her remaining heel and ran barefoot beside them.
As they reached the first landing, every fire door in the stairwell locked simultaneously.
Mara's satellite phone rang.
Vanessa spoke in a trembling voice.
"Grant says you have something he needs."

Behind her, Lily began to cry.
