Chapter 2 - The Authority He Borrowed.

Grant looked from Evelyn to Daniel and tried to rebuild his expression before the guests noticed his fear.

The attempt failed when Owen left the reception desk and approached with the formal posture of a manager delivering unwelcome news.

"Mr. Vale, your executive key has been deactivated," Owen said.

"Reactivate it," Grant snapped.

"I no longer have permission to accept instructions from you."

Celeste loosened her hold on Grant's arm.

The movement was small, but Mara saw it.

Grant had built their relationship on access, private suites, and the illusion that every luxury surrounding him belonged personally to him.

Now that illusion was flickering in public.

"This is a misunderstanding," Grant told the watching guests.

Nobody answered.

Evelyn opened the black case and removed a document bearing three gold seals.

"Grant Vale's authority was delegated by Mara Vale under Article Nine of the Valecrest Family Trust," she announced.

Grant's eyes hardened.

"That article expired when we married."

"No," Mara said. "You told me it expired."

Daniel turned his tablet toward Grant.

The screen showed the original trust structure, including Mara's sixty-two percent controlling interest.

Grant's title appeared beneath hers in smaller type, marked as revocable.

Celeste stepped closer to the display.

"You said you owned the company," she whispered.

"I run it," Grant replied.

"You ran it because I allowed you to," Mara said.

The words landed more heavily than any accusation.

Grant glanced toward the revolving doors, but two members of hotel security had quietly taken positions nearby.

They were not threatening him.

They were simply ensuring that nobody removed company property during the review.

"This spectacle is bad for the brand," Grant said.

"The spectacle began when you threw money at your wife and child," Evelyn replied.

Mara watched his jaw tighten.

For years, Grant had used the phrase bad for the brand whenever he wanted her silent.

He had said it when she questioned inflated vendor contracts.

He had said it when an employee reported that Celeste was receiving consulting payments without producing any work.

He had said it when Mara asked why Lily's education account had been moved into a holding company.

Each time, Grant had treated her concern as instability and his secrecy as leadership.

"Give me ten minutes with my wife," Grant said.

"You had eight years," Daniel replied.

Grant ignored him and lowered his voice.

"Mara, think about Lily."

Mara held their sleeping daughter more securely.

"I am."

"If you freeze everything, salaries could be affected. Hotels could close. Thousands of people could panic."

Daniel shook his head.

"Operating payroll is protected, and every property remains funded. Only your discretionary authority has been suspended."

Grant's final argument collapsed.

He had expected Mara to act emotionally so he could blame her for the consequences.

Instead, she had designed the action to protect everyone except the person who had abused her trust.

Celeste's phone buzzed again.

She read the message and turned sharply toward Grant.

"The penthouse lease was canceled."

Grant reached for her phone, but she pulled it away.

"That apartment was supposed to be in your name," she said.

"It will be fixed."

"It was paid by Valecrest Corporate Housing," Daniel said.

Celeste's face lost its practiced confidence.

Mara felt no satisfaction in watching another woman discover that Grant had lied to her too.

Celeste had known he was married and had enjoyed Mara's discomfort, but she had also believed a carefully manufactured story.

Grant pointed at Evelyn's case.

"Whatever you think you found can be explained."

"Excellent," Evelyn said. "You may explain it to the independent auditors."

Owen offered Mara a private sitting room where Lily could continue sleeping.

Mara declined.

She had spent too many years allowing difficult truths to be moved behind closed doors.

"We finish the first notice here," she said.

Evelyn handed Grant a sealed envelope.

He read the first page, and the color left his face again.

The notice suspended him from every Valecrest property and required the return of all devices, keys, and confidential records.

At the bottom was a line Grant had not expected.

Mara had petitioned for a complete accounting of every transaction he had approved during the previous three years.

"You cannot examine private marital expenses," he said.

"Company money is not a private marital expense," Mara replied.

Grant folded the notice too quickly, tearing its corner.

Evelyn watched him without emotion.

"There is one more matter," she said.

She removed a photograph from the case and placed it on the marble table.

The photograph showed Grant entering a bank in Zurich beside a man Mara had never seen.

On the back, someone had written a date from six weeks earlier and a single name.

Harlan Voss.

Grant saw it and whispered something Mara could barely hear.

"He wasn't supposed to be there."
