Thirteen minutes separated the Harbor Crown from a legal transfer that could take years to reverse.
The board meeting dissolved into overlapping voices.
Some directors demanded immediate payment.
Others warned that paying would validate the false default.
Harlan's counsel sent a settlement offer before anyone requested one.
Northstar would withdraw the claim if Mara transferred forty percent of the Harbor Crown by nine o'clock.
"He prepared the offer before the duplicate packet was accepted," Evelyn said.
"Then he controls the duplicate channel," Mara replied.
Daniel traced the packet through a Singapore subsidiary of Meridian Systems.
The lender's automated process had accepted it because the file carried Evelyn's copied credential and Mara's reconstructed signature.
Evelyn called the lender's general counsel, but the office was closed.
The emergency number required a loan identification code stored in Grant's former executive vault.
Grant smiled from the Halcyon video screen.
"Restore my access for sixty seconds, and I retrieve it."
Mara knew the request was another trap.
With restored access, Grant could approve the settlement or erase evidence.
"Tell us the code," Thomas ordered.
"I never memorized it."
Celeste leaned toward her camera.
"You memorize every number that proves you are important."
Grant glared at her.
She continued.
"He kept codes in a silver money clip because he said phones were for people who trusted technology."
Mara remembered the clip Grant used when he scattered cash across the lobby.
Security had collected his wallet and personal items but left the money on the floor as part of the incident record.
Owen ran to the velvet bench where the bills had scattered.
One folded note remained beneath it.
Inside the fold was a narrow strip of paper bearing four account codes.
Owen read them to Evelyn.
The first three failed.
The fourth connected her to the lender's emergency counsel with eight minutes remaining.
The counsel required proof that the signature was disputed before pausing the default.
Evelyn transmitted the defective seal analysis, but that alone was insufficient.
They needed a verified earlier sample showing that Grant possessed the signature model before the supposed authorizations were created.
Mara searched her memory.
Grant had once asked her to sign a stack of blank anniversary cards for hotel employees while she was recovering after Lily's birth.
She had refused and signed each completed card individually.
Grant had laughed and called her unnecessarily careful.
One card had been returned because the employee moved before delivery.
It remained in the Halcyon human-resources archive.
Owen sent a staff member to retrieve it.
Six minutes remained.
The card showed Mara's authentic signature beside a small ink smudge.
Daniel compared it with the forged authorizations.
Every false signature contained a faint duplicate of the same smudge in exactly the same position.
Natural signatures varied, but copied models repeated their imperfections.
Evelyn transmitted the analysis.
Four minutes remained.
The lender requested confirmation from an independent handwriting specialist.
Thomas knew one from a previous insurance investigation and placed an emergency video call.
The specialist examined enlarged images and confirmed obvious digital replication.
Two minutes remained.
The lender's counsel placed the default into temporary review.
Northstar's possession filing automatically paused.
The ballroom fell silent.
Mara did not celebrate until Daniel confirmed the pause directly through the lender's secure portal.
Grant lowered his eyes.
His silver money clip had saved the hotel he intended to surrender.
Thomas called for a formal board vote.
The directors unanimously affirmed Mara's controlling authority and suspended Grant pending independent proceedings.
They also rejected every financing proposal linked to Northstar Meridian.
Harlan called Mara's satellite phone before the vote record closed.
"You are protecting a sentimental hotel at enormous cost," he said.
"You mistook sentiment for weakness."
"Your husband made the same error in reverse."
Mara looked toward Grant on the screen.
"Grant mistook access for ownership."
Harlan remained quiet for the first time.
Mara authorized Evelyn to preserve the call and forward all evidence to the appropriate investigators and regulators.
Harlan ended the connection.
The board meeting concluded at nine twenty-three.
Mara went directly to Lily's room.
The child slept beside Adrian beneath a Harbor Crown blanket.
Adrian handed Mara a sealed envelope he had found inside his jacket.
Someone at the ferry terminal must have placed it there.
The envelope contained a final letter from Harlan.
It claimed Grant had not designed the scheme.
