Chapter 8 - The Rooftop Exchange.

Mara pressed the phone against her ear and forced her voice to remain calm.
"Put Lily somewhere safe and tell me what Grant promised you."
Vanessa insisted she had not hurt the child and never intended to frighten her.
She had been told that Mara was unstable and planned to leave the country with company records.
Grant had ordered Vanessa to keep Lily with hotel staff until Mara surrendered Adrian's blue box.
"You carried a sleeping child away from her lawyer," Mara said.
Vanessa began crying.
"He said it was a family custody instruction."
Mara heard wind through the phone and realized Vanessa was already on the open rooftop terrace.
The lounge was closed for renovation, leaving no guests nearby.
"Move away from the terrace edge and wait beside the elevator," Mara ordered.
"Grant said I must see the box first."
"Grant cannot protect you now."
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"He can release my messages and make this look like my plan."
Mara understood the pattern.
Grant had built a network of people bound by favors, fear, or secret embarrassment.
Each believed obedience was safer than honesty until the moment he abandoned them.
Daniel used the blue-box documents to identify Mason's maintenance override code.
The stairwell locks released.
They climbed rapidly, and Mara heard Lily crying through the phone the entire way.
On the twenty-second floor, Celeste stopped suddenly.
"Grant kept a private office on twenty-three," she said.
"There is another elevator from that office to the roof."
Mara told Daniel to continue upward with the box while she and Celeste checked the office.
The room was unlocked and empty.
Grant's jacket lay across a chair beside an open laptop.
He had escaped the lobby through the kitchen while everyone focused on the basement.
The laptop displayed the rooftop security feed.
Vanessa stood near the elevator holding Lily awkwardly.
Grant waited behind a decorative wall where Vanessa could not see him.
In his hand was another phone connected to the hotel alarm system.
Mara activated the office microphone.
"Vanessa, step into the elevator now."
Grant looked directly at the hidden camera.
He knew Mara had found him.
Vanessa moved toward the elevator, but Grant emerged and blocked her path.
"Give me my daughter," he said.
Lily reached toward him, confused by the familiar face and unfamiliar tension.
Vanessa hesitated.
Grant used the moment to take the child.
Mara felt the room narrow around her.
"Grant, bring Lily downstairs," she said through the microphone.
"Bring me the box."
"The documents have already been copied."
Grant's confidence flickered.
Celeste leaned toward the microphone.
"She is telling the truth, Grant."
He heard her voice and stared at the camera.
"You chose her side?"
"There are no sides left," Celeste replied. "There is only what you did."
Grant carried Lily toward the private elevator.
Mara and Celeste entered the same shaft from the office and selected the roof.
The doors opened to hard wind and amber evening light.
Daniel stood near Vanessa with two security officers, but Grant had moved behind a locked glass partition.
He held Lily securely, yet the child's frightened expression tore through Mara's composure.
"Mommy," Lily cried.
Mara approached the glass.
"I am right here, sweetheart."
Grant lifted his phone.
"Restore my authority, and I hand her back."
Mara looked at the man she had once trusted beside a hospital crib.
"You are using your daughter as a bargaining chip."
"I am preventing you from destroying her future."
"Her future is the reason you lost yours."
Owen's voice came through Mara's satellite phone.
He had regained control of the rooftop partition.
Mara gave the authorization.
The glass door unlocked with a soft click.
Grant heard it and stepped backward.
Celeste moved first, distracting him by throwing his open laptop bag across the terrace.
Grant turned instinctively.
Mara crossed the distance and took Lily from his arms.
Security stepped between them immediately.
Lily buried her face against Mara's neck.
Grant did not resist the officers, but he looked at Mara with desperate fury.
"Adrian is at the ferry terminal because of you," he said.
Mara froze.
Grant smiled without warmth.
"Harlan never wanted the ledger."
"What does he want?"
May you like
"The one person who can legally replace you as trustee."
