Chapter 3 - The Name on the Photograph.

Mara had expected denial, anger, and even a performance of wounded dignity.

She had not expected Grant to look frightened by a name.

Harlan Voss meant nothing to her, but it clearly meant something to Evelyn and Daniel.

Daniel closed the hotel manager's tablet and asked Owen to secure the photograph.

"Who is he?" Mara asked.

Evelyn did not answer immediately.

She looked around the lobby, then gestured toward a glass-walled conference room beyond the concierge desk.

"This part should not be discussed beside the fountain," she said.

Mara agreed only after Owen promised that the room's doors would remain visible from the lobby.

Grant followed because security held his company phone and because leaving would make him look guiltier than staying.

Celeste hesitated before joining them.

The confidence in her walk had vanished.

Inside the conference room, Mara placed Lily on a cushioned sofa and covered her with a cream hotel blanket.

The child sighed peacefully, untouched by the adult world collapsing around her.

Mara sat beside her.

Grant remained standing.

"Harlan Voss manages distressed acquisitions through a private firm called Northstar Meridian," Evelyn explained.

"He buys valuable companies after internal crises reduce their price."

Mara understood before Evelyn finished.

"Grant was creating the crisis."

"That is one possibility," Daniel said.

Grant laughed too loudly.

"You built a fantasy from one photograph."

Evelyn placed bank summaries on the table.

Eleven million dollars had moved through four consulting firms and returned as secured debt against two Valecrest hotels.

If the debt had been triggered, Northstar Meridian could have claimed both properties.

Those hotels included the Halcyon Grand and the Harbor Crown, the first property Mara's parents had built together.

"You used our own money to create a claim against us," Mara said.

Grant shook his head.

"I arranged emergency financing because your board refused to expand."

"There was no emergency," Daniel replied.

"There would have been after the expansion."

Mara watched Grant reshape the scheme into an act of foresight.

He had always possessed that talent.

Every selfish decision became sacrifice when he described it.

Every warning became an insult to his vision.

Every lie became something he had supposedly told to protect her.

"Why was Lily's education account listed as collateral?" Mara asked.

Grant looked away for the first time.

Celeste stared at him.

"You told me Mara moved that money," she said.

"Stay out of this."

"You brought me into it when you paid my apartment through those companies."

Grant leaned over the table.

"I gave you a life nobody else could provide."

Celeste's expression cooled.

"Apparently, Mara provided it."

The remark was sharp, but Mara noticed fear underneath it.

Celeste was beginning to calculate how much of Grant's trouble carried her name.

Evelyn asked her to surrender any company-funded devices.

Celeste placed a green-cased phone on the table but kept her handbag closed.

Mara saw Grant glance at the bag.

The glance lasted less than a second.

It was enough.

"There is another device," Mara said.

Celeste gripped the handbag strap.

"This is personal."

"Then it should contain no company records," Evelyn answered.

Grant moved toward the glass door.

Owen opened it from the other side before Grant could touch the handle.

"Your car service has been suspended, sir," the manager said.

Grant stared at him with open contempt.

"You used to carry my luggage."

"And I still respect luggage," Owen replied.

Mara almost smiled, but Daniel's tablet sounded with an urgent alert.

He examined the screen, and his face tightened.

Someone had attempted to access the company's reserve account using Grant's expired credentials.

The attempt had come from inside the Halcyon Grand.

Everyone looked toward Grant.

He held up his empty hands.

"You took my phone."

Daniel checked the access signature.

"The request came from a secondary device registered to your office."

Mara turned toward Celeste's closed handbag.

Celeste backed away from the table.

"I don't know anything about a reserve account."

Grant suddenly lunged for the bag, but Owen stepped between them and caught it as the strap slipped free.

The contents spilled across the carpet.

Cosmetics, a gold key card, and a second black phone landed beside the conference table.

The phone's screen remained lit.

Across it appeared a message from Harlan Voss.
