Chapter 12: The Weight of a Secret

The venue for the ceremony was breathtaking—a historic estate boasting sprawling hallways with high ceilings, warm elegant lighting, and reflective marble floors that mirrored the grand chandeliers above.

Clara looked radiant in a modern, elegant gown, while Lily spun in circles, delighted by her delicate white sparkly lace dress. Before the ceremony began, Clara pulled Lily aside into a private bridal suite. She handed her daughter a small, velvet box containing a custom-engraved vintage compass—a symbol of Arthur always finding his way home to them.

“Lily, sweetheart, this is a very special surprise for Daddy,” Clara whispered with a conspiratorial smile. “I need you to keep this safe until I call for the rings. Mom says it’s a secret, okay? Stay hidden in the hall until the music starts, and whatever you do, don't tell him.”

Lily nodded solemnly, her big eyes wide with the immense responsibility. She clutched the velvet box to her chest and slipped out the door.

However, the bustling caterers, the echo of the grand hall, and the sheer pressure of keeping such a massive secret from her father suddenly became entirely too much for the little girl. Overwhelmed, Lily retreated down a quiet corridor, shrinking into a corner as tears of anxiety began to well up in her eyes.
