Chapter 20: The Light Ahead

The next morning, golden sunlight poured through the large bay windows of the kitchen, illuminating the crisp white cabinetry and the pristine marble floors. The house was quiet, save for the soft, familiar bubbling of the coffee maker.

Arthur stood at the counter, dressed in comfortably worn sweatpants and a simple t-shirt. He poured two mugs of coffee, the steam rising in delicate swirls into the morning air. Beside the coffee maker sat the polished brass compass, perfectly catching the morning light.

Clara walked into the kitchen, wearing Arthur's old gray hoodie over her pajamas. She wrapped her arms around him from behind, resting her cheek against his back.

"Good morning, husband," she murmured softly.

"Good morning, wife," Arthur replied, turning around to hand her a warm mug. He leaned down, kissing her softly on the lips. "How does it feel to be married to me all over again?"

Clara took a sip of her coffee, her eyes scanning the beautiful, peaceful kitchen. There were no ghosts here anymore. No echoes of harsh words or agonizing fear. There was only the smell of fresh coffee, the warmth of the sun, and the man who had chosen her over everything else.

"It feels exactly like it should," Clara said, her voice filled with profound contentment. She reached out and traced the smooth brass edge of the compass. "We made it, Arthur. We really made it."

Arthur pulled her close, resting his chin on the top of her head. Upstairs, the soft patter of small feet signaled that Lily was awake, ready to begin a new day. Arthur closed his eyes, holding his wife tightly as the true weight of their happiness settled over him. The storm was a distant memory; the rest of their lives was nothing but clear skies.
