Chapter 19: Safe Harbor

The drive home was quiet, accompanied only by the soft hum of the car engine and the gentle rhythm of Lily’s breathing. The excitement of the day had finally caught up with the six-year-old, and she was fast asleep in the backseat, her sparkly lace dress slightly rumpled, one hand still lightly clutching the small velvet box containing the compass.
When they pulled into the driveway, the house stood welcoming and dark, bathed only in the silver glow of the moon. Arthur carefully unbuckled Lily and lifted her into his arms, carrying her effortlessly up the front steps. Clara unlocked the door, holding it open as they stepped into the quiet warmth of their foyer.
They walked upstairs to Lily's bedroom, a cozy space painted in soft pastels and filled with books and stuffed animals. Arthur gently laid her down on the mattress while Clara pulled the covers up, tucking them snugly under her chin.
Clara took the velvet box from Lily’s relaxed grip and set it gently on the nightstand. She leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to her daughter’s forehead.

"Sleep well, our little secret keeper," Clara whispered.
Arthur pressed a kiss to Lily's cheek, lingering for a moment to listen to the steady, peaceful sound of her breathing. He wrapped his arm around Clara’s waist as they stepped out of the room, leaving the door cracked just enough to let a sliver of hallway light spill across the floor. This house, once a site of immense terror, was now an impenetrable fortress of love.
