Chapter 2: The Shattered Illusion

Arthur stood paralyzed for a fraction of a second, the image burning into his retinas. The mother he respected was holding a weapon over the wife he adored. The bouquet of white lilies slipped from his grasp, scattering delicate petals across the marble floor. His white duffel bag followed, hitting the ground with a heavy thud.
He didn't speak. His face, initially frozen in shock, hardened into an expression of sheer dismay. Reaching into his crisp uniform pocket, he pulled out his smartphone. His thumbs moved rapidly across the screen, bypassing any attempt at conversation to immediately dial 911.
Eleanor’s mask of composure slipped back into place with terrifying speed. She set the hissing iron on the counter.

"Arthur, darling! You're home early," she cooed, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. She stepped over the scattered lilies as if Clara weren't bleeding at her feet. "It’s not what it looks like. Clara had a terrible fall. She’s simply hysterical, pregnancy hormones and all."
Arthur ignored her entirely. His eyes remained locked on Clara, who was trembling violently against the cabinetry, her hands still desperately shielding her unborn child.
