Chapter 14: The Sweetest Relief

The tension in the hallway was palpable, rooted entirely in a young child's innocent anxiety. Arthur leaned in closer, his expression searching and deeply reassuring. He didn't care about his tuxedo or the impending ceremony; his only focus was easing the burden on his daughter's heart.
“You can tell me,” Arthur said softly, his thumb brushing a tear from her freckled cheek.
Before Lily could answer, a door down the hall flew open. Clara, a beautiful twenty-five-year-old bride once again, stepped out into the hallway. Her face was a portrait of panic, having realized Lily was missing from her designated waiting spot.
She stopped in her tracks, taking in the scene: her husband holding their crying daughter’s hands. Arthur and Lily both turned to look at her. Arthur maintained his steady, caring hold on his daughter, his eyes silently asking Clara what was wrong.
Lily looked back at her father with big, hesitant, tearful eyes. She took a shuddering breath, holding onto her mother's instructions with unwavering loyalty.
“Mom said I mustn’t tell you anything,” Lily whispered, barely audible.
Clara’s panicked expression instantly melted into a puddle of overwhelming guilt and affection. She rushed forward, dropping to her knees in her beautiful gown, wrapping them both in a massive embrace.

“Oh, my sweet girl, I’m so sorry,” Clara laughed through sudden, relieved tears, kissing Lily’s cheek. “It’s just a present! A good secret! You don’t have to carry it all by yourself.”
Arthur smiled, wrapping his arms around both of his girls, the misunderstanding dissolving into the echoing warmth of the marble hallway.
