The distant, piercing wail of sirens sliced through the quiet suburban evening, growing exponentially louder with each passing second. Suddenly, the flashing red and blue lights of police cruisers flooded through the kitchen's large bay windows, casting frantic, pulsing shadows across the pristine white walls and the faces of those inside.
Eleanor froze in her tracks. She looked toward the window, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror. Her mouth fell open in a horrified gasp as the severe reality of her actions finally crashed down upon her. The untouchable, wealthy facade she had carefully constructed over decades was disintegrating in an instant.
