Chapter 5: The Downfall

“Police! Step away and show me your hands!”
Two officers burst through the kitchen doorway, their service weapons drawn and flashlights cutting through the illuminated room. Their eyes immediately assessed the chaotic scene: the weeping, battered pregnant woman on the floor, the naval officer shielding her, and the older woman standing near a pair of steaming irons.
Eleanor raised her perfectly manicured hands, her earlier composure entirely evaporated. “Officers, please! There has been a terrible misunderstanding. I am Eleanor Vance. My family practically built this town—”
“Ma'am, face the wall and put your hands behind your back,” a female officer commanded, stepping forward with handcuffs unholstered.
“You can’t do this!” Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking as the officer firmly guided her against the white cabinetry. The metallic click of the handcuffs snapping around her wrists echoed sharply over the hiss of the forgotten irons. “Arthur! Tell them! Tell them I was only trying to help!”
Arthur didn't even look at her. He kept his body angled defensively around Clara as paramedics rushed into the room carrying a stretcher and medical bags.

“She assaulted my wife,” Arthur told the lead officer, his voice remarkably steady despite the fury burning in his eyes. “She threatened her with those irons. I want her removed from my property, and I am pressing full charges.”
As the police escorted a sobbing, humiliated Eleanor out the front door, the paramedics gently lifted Clara onto the stretcher. Arthur grasped Clara's hand, his thumb stroking her knuckles. The crushed lily petals clung to the damp soles of the paramedics' boots as they wheeled her out into the cool night air, away from the nightmare.
