Chapter 7: The Heavy Weight of Paper

Three days later, the morning sun filtered brightly into the living room of Clara and Arthur’s home. The kitchen had been scrubbed clean, the shattered petals and agonizing memories wiped from the marble floors.

On a polished, reflective glass table in the center of the room sat a fresh vase of vibrant white lilies. Next to the flowers rested a thick, imposing stack of formal legal documents.

Arthur stood over the table, staring down at the paperwork. They were protective orders, sworn affidavits, and documents severing all financial and legal ties with his mother's estate. The district attorney had already filed felony aggravated assault charges against Eleanor. She was currently sitting in a county jail cell, denied bail due to the severity of the attack on a pregnant woman.

A sharp-suited lawyer sat on the sofa opposite the table, waiting patiently. “Once you sign these, Commander Vance, the restraining orders become permanent. She won't be able to contact you, Clara, or your future child. Ever.”

“Good,” Arthur said firmly. He picked up a heavy silver pen.

Clara walked slowly into the room, leaning slightly on a cane to keep the weight off her healing legs. She wore a comfortable, loose sweater, her baby bump prominent and proud. She stepped up beside Arthur, resting her hand on his shoulder.

He looked at her, his expression softening instantly. With a resolute nod, Arthur leaned over the reflective glass table and signed his name on the dotted lines, pressing hard enough to leave a permanent indent. The ink dried quickly, sealing their safety and closing the darkest chapter of their lives.
